I was given this book as part of the good reads giveaways. (Yay!) I tried to go into this book with no expectations, but I was very excited and hopeful that it would be awesome. After the first chapter I was torn, it wasn't what I expected but I couldn't figure out how I felt about it. At the time I was very busy and was reading whenever I got the chance, but in a lot of little increments. This is a book where I would not recommend doing that. From that point on I started reading in longer periods and it made all the difference.
This wasn't a book that sucked me in and I couldn't put down, but it was still very interesting. The writer did a great job of getting a wide variety of people points of views that shows a nice round picture of Steve jobs, his good stuff and his bad. This did however end up being a lot of information that at times felt like it bogged down the narrative a little bit. I was worried when I started that at points there would be a lot of tech talk that would either be over my head or kind of boring, but I found it to be the opposite. As they talk about the beginnings of the company and the first type of products that they made I just kept looking up and staring from my book to my iPhone and thinking wow. Steve Jobs may not have been the nicest person or the easiest to work with, but he left behind an amazing legacy that this book really showcases. You will find yourself stopping and going "huh" "wow" "how" and really appreciating the brain and person behind what many of you are reading this review on. The author chose quotes wisely, not only backing up what he was writing, but also adding in little details that finish off the picture.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a good read, albeit somewhat long and dense. I would tell you to set aside a chunk of time each day to read it, ( for me 50 pages a day was a good number) and allow yourself to realize how incredible this story of a life is. Even those who didn't like him, seemed to be in slight awe of him, something the author captures subtly. And don't give up, even if you find a patch where you think it's a little dry or slow going. This book left me thinking, what can I do and what can I leave behind that's inspiring. I hope it does the same for you.
