[blocks in formation]

The total volume of the pack (150 Navels) was measured by displacement

in water.

Table I.-Shows the average normal loss in weight per orange per day over periods of 37 and 79 days.

Table II.-Shows the effect of coating the orange with vaseline. The object of this was to test the keeping quality when normal loss in weight was checked. Vaseline evidently interferes with the normal ripening of the fruit, hence the unpleasant taste even when the fruit appeared to be sound. Nothing is to be gained by using this method to prevent wilting.

Tables III. and IV.

Similar results from other experiments.

Table V.-Given the decrease in diameter in the fruits the number of fruits in a layer and the number of layers in a pack an approximation to the shrinkage of the pack as a whole can be arrived at. Measurements such as these make it clear why packs of very small fruits shrink as a whole much more than packs of larger fruits.

Table VI.-Shows the normal average loss in volume per orange per day over a period of 57 days. This agrees with the results shown in Tables I., III.
