REPORT FOR THE YEAR 1915

RENO, NEVADA, November 30, 1915.

To His Excellency, GOVERNOR EMMET D. BOYLE, C'arson City, Nevada. DEAR SIR: I herewith submit to you the ninth annual report of the Nevada State Sheep Commission for the year ending November 30, 1915:

The past year's work of inspection shows only a very small infection of scabbies, which was confined to a very few owners and limited area. The outbreak of necrobacillosis among the breeding bucks, as mentioned in last year's report as being of a very serious nature, has responded readily to the treatments given. Although at shearing time last spring a goodly per cent of infection was discovered, I am pleased to report that all went to winter ranges in very good condition.

The sheep owners have taken the published request of the Commissioners, relative to the dipping of sheep for ticks, very kindly. It seems to be the growing sentiment among the owners that it is becoming necessary in the near future, at the present rate of increase, to have all sheep dipped as a method of eradicating, or at least checking, the increase.

At the several meetings of the Commissioners held during the past twelve months, the following items were acted upon, as of record in minute book:

The tax rate for the year 1915 was placed at 8 mills on the dollar of the assessed valuation of sheep, bucks, and goats within the State. Although the above rate is larger than for several years past, it was deemed advisable by the Commissioners to enable them to maintain at all times a sufficient treasury balance to combat financially any serious outbreak of diseases among the herds. This idea has always been suggested by leading officers of the Bureau of Animal Industry of the 'United States.

The following were published in papers of general circulation throughout the State:

GENERAL ORDER NO. 19

In view of the danger that has been incurred to the sheep industry of the State of Nevada through the introduction of bucks for breeding purposes, the Nevada State Sheep Commission does hereby issue the following order: That all bucks entering the State for breeding purposes shall be dipped in lime-andsulphur dip with an interval of 10 to 14 days between dippings; the first dipping to be made within 10 days after entry into the State, and under the supervision of a Federal or State Inspector.

GENERAL ORDER NO. 20

To All Owners or Parties in Control of Sheep:

It is hereby ordered that all sheep within the State shall be inspected at least once a year, and a certificate issued for all sheep found free from scab. If sheep are found to be scabby, they must be immediately quarantined and dipped twice (lime-and-sulphur dip), 10 to 14 days apart; if sheep are actually exposed, they must be dipped once. The above dippings must be under the immediate supervision of a State or Federal Inspector, in a vat approved by him, and at the owner's expense. When satisfactorily dipped, a certificate will be issued stating that the sheep have been dipped as approved by the Commission.

These orders shall take effect on and after this date, January 31, 1914.

GENERAL ORDER NO. 21

To the Owners of Sheep:

It is the earnest request of the Nevada State Sheep Commission that all sheep owners dip their sheep for ticks on or before September 15, 1915. Any coal-tar dip at a temperature of 80 to 90 degrees is recommended.
