5. Assuming all buildings scoring less than 300 to be abandoned by 1928, determine the number that must be provided for in new buildings for elementary, junior high school, and senior high school by that time.

6. Neglecting the cost of sites and repair of old buildings, estimate the cost of the new buildings or additions that should be provided before 1928 for elementary schools, for junior high schools, and for senior high schools.

PROBLEM 103

ESTIMATING EQUIPMENT COSTS FOR AN
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Problem: The floor plans for a new elementary school have been presented by the architect to Superintendent Brown and the Board of Education in Fairfield, N. K., and accepted. Superintendent Brown requests that you, as assistant superintendent in charge of business affairs, present an itemized statement covering amount and cost of the educational equipment which will be required for the building to house capacity load.

This building has been planned to meet the requirements of a kindergarten and six-year elementary school organization. The building is to be equipped as well as the average of the better schools in the country. Especially should this hold true for the library, kindergarten, general shop, medical suite, and roof play facilities. Climatic conditions do not demand a housed gymnasium. The equipment is to include an electrical time and program clock system and also a fire alarm system.

The plans are shown in Diagrams 1, 2, and 3 on the opposite page.

Assignment

1. Using the Loomis technique, estimate the costs of the equipment for this building.

2. What is the full capacity of this building under the kindergarten-six-year elementary organization? Is adequate shop and library provision made?

3. What are the criteria which can be defensibly used in differentiating between building equipment and educational equipment?
