PROBLEM 89

PLANNING AND BUYING EQUIPMENT FOR A NEW HIGH SCHOOL

Problem: The contracts have just recently been let for the erection of the Franklin High School, Franklin, N. K. This school will ultimately have a capacity of 1,200 to 1,400 children, but only that part is being built which will provide accommodations for 750 children. The Board of Education has set aside $50,000 for the equipment of this school and has asked the architect to coöperate with the superintendent of schools in the preparation of the specifications for the equipment.

The specifications were prepared in accordance with this request and were submitted to the Board of Education for its approval. The Board accepted the specifications and requested the architect to send them to companies who would submit bids and samples wherever feasible.

Following are the specifications as approved by the Board of Education:

SECTION I. STEEL LOCKERS, SUPPLY CABINETS, AND STEEL SHELVING

Gymnasium Lockers in Locker and Shower Rooms:

260-12" x 12" x 36" double tier lockers, without locks but equipped with hasps for padlock, numbered as directed, with oak keyboard correspondingly numbered, lockers to have adjustable legs, full louvred doors, three hooks in each, assembled in the following groups.

Basket lockers in shower and locker rooms distributed as follows:

Basket lockers are to be equipped with hasps for padlocks, but without locks. They are to be numbered with two oak keyboards. correspondingly numbered as directed.

Students' Lockers in Corridors:

725-12" x 15" x 60" single tier lockers, recessed type, without locks but equipped with hasps for padlocks, numbered as directed, with oak keyboard correspondingly numbered, lockers to have part louvred doors, metal trim around each group, three hooks and one shelf in each locker, assembled in the following groups as shown on plans:

First Floor:

6, 6, 13, 18, 18, 13, 13, 11, 13, 12, 9, 2, 12, 9, 13, 12, 13, 12-Total, 205 Second Floor:

The above list is taken from the plans and is furnished for the convenience of the bidders but if it is found to differ therefrom, the

plans must be followed in preference to this list. The locker manufacturer must check the plans carefully and report any discrepancy to the architect before the lockers are built.

Teachers' Lockers in Teachers' Rooms:

These are to be the same as lockers in corridors but with adjustable legs, 2-keyed and master-keyed locks, numbered as directed with oak keyboard correspondingly numbered.

198 box lockers, 15′′ wide x 15" deep x 12" high, sections 6 lockers high, with adjustable legs, louvred doors, with 2-keyed and masterkeyed locks, numbered with oak keyboard correspondingly numbered, each locker to be provided with tray 15" x 15" x 3" high, and assembled in groups as follows:

31 cabinets, 35" wide x 18" deep x 72" high, with legs and each supplied with four adjustable shelves, fitted with 2-keyed, masterkeyed locks, numbered, with oak keyboard correspondingly numbered. These cabinets shall be similar to Miller's No. 258 Stationary Cabinets. Twenty-five of these are for use in recitation rooms, one each in art, typing, and bookkeeping room and two in clothing iaboratory storeroom, two in clothing laboratories, and one in food laboratory No. 1.

Steel Wardrobes:

2 steel wardrobes in clothing laboratory storeroom 35′′ wide x 18" deep x 72" high with legs and each supplied with one shelf, two coats rods, and 12 coat hangers, fitted with 2-keyed, master-keyed locks numbered and master-keyed with supply cabinets.

All lockers and cabinets shall be finished in light gray baked-on enamel and shall be equal in quality to the standard lockers as built by the John Miller Co., Madison, N. K.

Steel Shelving:

All steel shelving shall be constructed like and equal to that manufactured by John Miller Co., Madison, N. K. All shelves shall be adjustable. All parts shall be finished in light gray bakedon enamel. It shall be of the "Type A-Open Back," or "Type BClosed Back," or "Type C-Closed Back with Bin Fronts" as specified below.

Post Office Boxes:

These shall be as shown on plans in one section 36" wide x 12" deep x 72" high and shall be built similar to Miller's Unit D-1 with closed back and ends, open front, with partitions and card holders, 60 pigeonholes 3" x 6", 6 pigeonholes 6" x 6", and 2 shelves and open space below.

Shelves in Book Room:

1 assembly Unit B closed back and ends 21′ long, 11' high, 12′′ deep. Shelves spaced 9" on centers with 6′′ adjustable counter, card holders and #113 shelf ladder.

1 assembly Unit B closed back and ends 11' long, 7' high, 12′′ deep, shelves spaced 9" on centers, with cord holders.

1 assembly Unit A, but with closed ends and open back for double facing, 11' long, 7′ high, 24" deep. Shelves spaced 12′′ on centers with card holders.

Shelves in Teachers' Rooms:

1 assembly 8′ long and 1 assembly 6' long each Unit B closed back and ends 6' high, 12" deep with 3 shelves spaced 12" on centers and 4 shelves spaces 9" on centers with card holders.

Shelves in Gymnasium Apparatus Room:

1 assembly Unit A open back and ends 6′ long, 6′ high, 12′′ deep, shelves spaced 12" on centers.

Shelves in store closet adjoining general office two assemblies same as in gymnasium apparatus room, one assembly with E closed back and ends with bin fronts 4' long, 6' high, 12" deep, shelves spaced 12" on centers.

Steel Shelves in Receiving Room:

1 assembly 21' long, 6' high and 12" deep, four sections of Unit

E with closed back and bin fronts, shelves 15" on centers, and three sections of Unit B with closed back and ends and shelves 12" on centers, both sections to have 12′′ adjustable counter and cord holders. Steel Shelves in Vault:

3 assemblies each 6′ long, 6′ high and 12" deep, two to be of Unit B with three shelves spaced 12" and 4 shelves spaced 9" on centers and one of Unit C with same number of shelves, but with vertical partitions 12" on centers. One section shall have two money drawers 12" x 12" x 4" each with lock and two keys, all assemblies to have card holders.

Shelves in Janitor's Room:

2 assemblies 6' long, 6′ high and 12" deep, with card holders, one section in each assembly to be of Unit B and one section of Unit C with two vertical partitions, all shelves spaced 12′′ on centers.

Shelves in Chemistry Instructor's Room:

1 assembly, 9' long, 6′ high and 12′′ deep, one section to be of Unit B with shelves 12" on centers, one section to be of Unit C with three shelves spaced 12" on centers and four shelves spaced 9" on centers with two vertical partitions and one section to be of Unit F, same shelf and partition spacing as above Unit C, but with bin fronts, all to have card holders.

Steel Shelves in Clothing Laboratory Storeroom:

2 assemblies each 12′ long, 6′ high and 12" deep, one assembly to be of Unit B with shelves spaced 12" on centers and one assembly to be of Unit C with three shelves 12′′ on centers and four shelves 9" on centers and two vertical partitions. One 3' section. of the Unit C to have bin fronts, all to have card holders.

Steel Shelving in Food Laboratory Supply Room:

1 assembly 12' long, 6′ high and 12" deep, Unit B with shelves spaced 12" on centers with card holders.

2 assemblies cach 6' long, 6′ high and 12" deep of Unit H with bin fronts and with counter partitions 12′′ deep, shelves spaced 12" on centers above counter and 18" on centers below counter, all with card holders.

Sample of each type of locker, cabinet, and shelving shall be submitted with bid.

All lockers, cabinets, and shelving shall be installed in building ready for use, subject to the inspection and approval of the architect.
