PROBLEM 65

SPACE REQUIREMENTS FOR A NEW HIGH
SCHOOL BUILDING

Problem: The Board of Education of Fort Robinson, N. K., has voted to build a cosmopolitan senior high school to accommodate 1,500 pupils. The superintendent has been requested to present at the next board meeting a statement showing the number and kinds of rooms and the space requirements for all rooms for the proposed enrollment.

After a series of conferences with the members of the high school staff, the superintendent has prepared the schedule of rooms and room sizes which is shown on the following pages.

Assignment

1. Estimate the capacity of the building proposed in this layout.

2. What are your criticisms of room sizes?

3. Explain what is meant by "number of units"; "number of report rooms"; "number of locker and book units."

4. Estimate the proportion of students for whom provision is proposed in each of the major subdivisions of the curricculum.

5. Study the provision for physical education. Determine the kind of program which may be advanced with the facilities proposed.

6. As a member of the Board of Education, what additional information descriptive of the proposed school would you be justified in expecting the superintendent to submit at this time?

7. Examine critically the requirements for science. What suggestions have you to offer?

9. What differences would a seven-period school day make in utilization of this building as contrasted with a six-period day? An eight-period day?
