PROBLEM 8

DISTRIBUTION OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENROLLMENT

Problem: The superintendent at Selkyville, N. K., has recommended to the Board of Education the adoption of a 6-3-3 educational program in place of the 8-4 program now being followed. The recommendation has been accepted by the Board of Education. The superintendent proceeds to discover the number of junior high schools needed and their location.

Among the data assembled by the superintendent for the solution of this problem is a residential distribution of all children attending the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. This is shown in Diagram 1. Each dot in this diagram represents the home of a child attending these grades.

Assignment

1. Indicate how you, as superintendent of schools, would expect to use the facts of this diagram.

2. What other data would you seek to collect to assist you in arriving at your decisions?

3. In what respects would the enrollments of the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades be superior for this purpose? The fourth, fifth, and sixth grades?

4. What factors should determine the maximum travel distance for junior high school students?

5. How would you determine the maximum acceptable enrollments for these schools?

6. Suggest the means which you, as superintendent of schools, would employ for securing the initial data and placing the dots on this map.

7. What are the problems involved in securing maps adequate for this purpose?
