United States, Geological Survey. The most valuable publications from 'this source as far as West Virginia is concerned are the following: Topographical Maps covering the State, except the northwestern one-third. the Piedmont Folio, Harper's Ferry Folio. Pocahontas Folio, Staunton Folio Franklin Folio and Buckhannon Folio.

United States, Records of the Rebellion, published by the War Department. They contain official reports of Federal and Confederate officers, and are valuable as a record of occurrences affecting West Virginia during the Civil War. 106 volumes

A complete list of the public laws, documents, and records consulted in the preparation of this book is too bulky to be inserted in full, A Bibliography of the State Publications of West Virginia, by Richard Ellsworth Fast, has been accepted for publication in a work now on the press, entitled "State Publications," compiled under the editorial direction of Mr. R. R. Bowker of the Publisher's Weekly, New York. This book when published will be a complete guide to the State publications from 1863 to 1900. NEWSPAPERS.

The use of newspapers as a source of historical material calls for mature judgment, the most acute discrimination, and the most careful criticism. When properly corroborated the sources of this character may be used to great advantage in the way of illustration, and in giving flavor to the narrative. A list of most of the older newspapers that are still published is appended, together with notices of some that are no longer printed. But it is impossible to note all that deserve a place,
