of regional caregivers, school administrators, teachers, students, parents, community associations, churches, law-enforcement agencies, government officials, and the media. It included:

◆ A presentation by the nation-
ally acclaimed comedian Ken
Davis;

A poster and banner contest us-
ing anti-drug themes;
Recover-through-song enter-
tainment by country western
singer Paul Richey from Nash-
ville, Tennessee;

Anti-drug endorsements by a
U.S. Congressman, State Con-
gressmen, and other dignitaries;
◆ Anti-drug message skits and
step-shows performed by high-
school and college-groups;
◆ A lottery drawing of give-

aways from local merchants. Speakers included Carl Eller, famed football athlete and certified AOD abuse counselor from Minneapolis, Minnesota, who represented an

exemplary national program, the United States Athletes Association; Shirley Armstead, a Drug Enforcement Agency agent from St. Louis, Missouri, who showcased an innovative regional drug enforcement program; and a panel consisting of local judges, attorneys, and treatment specialists who shared trends and prevention strategies.

More than 1,000 people attended the conference and drug rally as a result of a successful grassroots marketing strategy. The local television

station and newspaper both promoted and featured the conference in conjunction with a special "Zero Tolerance" anti-drug series of reports. Local radio stations aired public service announcements and featured the conference director and keynote speaker on a morning talk show. Other media support included articles published by community groups and mass mailings of fliers and brochures to target audiences.
