MILITARY PAY INCREASE

The subcommittee appointed to consider H.R. 5555, to increase the rates of basic pay for members of the uniformed services, composed of Senators Cannon (chairman), Ervin, Engle, Young, Saltonstall, and Beall, met, pursuant to notice, at 10:05 a.m. in room 212, New Senate Office Building.

Present: Senators Cannon (presiding), Engle, Young, Saltonstall,

and Beall.

Also present: Harry L. Wingate, Jr., chief clerk; T. Edward Braswell, Jr., of the committee staff; and Herbert S. Átkinson, assistant chief clerk.

Senator CANNON. The committee meeting will come to order.

The purpose of today's meeting is to begin the hearings on H.R. 5555, the military pay bill.

AN ACT To amend title 37, United States Code, to increase the rates of basic pay for members of the uniformed services, and for other purposes

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That this Act may be cited as the "Uniformed Services Pay Act of 1963".

BASIC PAY

SEC. 2. Section 203 of title 37, United States Code, is amended to read as follows:

"S 203. Rates

"The rates of monthly basic pay for members of the uniformed services within each pay grade are set forth in the following tables :

"1 While serving as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Chief of Staff of the Army, Chief of Naval Operations, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Commandant of the Marine Corps, or Commandant of the Coast Guard, basic pay for this grade is $1,970 regardless of years of service computed under sec. 205 of this title. "2 While serving as a permanent professor at the U.S. Military Academy or the U.S. Air Force Academy, basic pay for this grade is $1,165, if the officer has over 31 years of service computed under sec. 205 of this title, and $1,235, if the officer has over 36 years of that service.
