BUDGET REQUESTS

Senator PASTORE. The subcommittee will be in order.

This morning we commence the hearings on the regular budget estimates submitted for the Departments of State, Justice, and Commerce, the judiciary, and related agencies for the fiscal year 1974. The new obligational authority totals $4,267,686,000. This sum is $1,964,425,850 under the 1973 total enacted to date of $6,232,111,850. Our first activity group concerns the judiciary branch.

According to the judiciary summary table, you are requesting a total of $205,441,000 for fiscal 1974, which is over the total enacted to date by $16,600,400. This net increase over 1973 appropriations includes:

For the Supreme Court, $566,400;

For the Court of Customs and Patent Appeals, $8,000;
For the Court of Claims, $15,000;
