This manual of case studies is for use in the training of nursing home administrators. It represents the efforts of experts in the various disciplines to aid the administrator in providing the services needed for high quality patient care.

The case studies, some of which are new and some revised, have been prepared for use in conjunction with a prototype seminar ("Fostering UniversityBased Seminars for Administrators of Long-Term Care Facilities and Potential Extended Care Facilities"), and the teaching reference community ("Dixon, Tiller County, U.S.A.") developed by the Community Health Service, HSMHA. While originally intended to help nursing home administrators to qualify as providers of service under Medicare (Title XVIII), they now also encompass the provisions of Medicaid (Title XIX) for skilled nursing homes, as well as intermediate care facilities.

They may also be used for other purposes, such as college and university courses in nursing home administration, correspondence courses, and for use by States in programs of training required under Public Law 90-248, in conjunction with the licensing of nursing home administrators.

We feel that administrators taking advantage of these case studies will enhance their ability to provide services necessary to offer a high level of care to the long-term patient.
