PREFACE

The primary purpose of this book is to provide those

attending a National Security Seminar with background information on each of the Seminar presentation subjects. It is believed that the conferee will find this material of value as additional information which cannot be included in the presentations because of time limitation, and in providing a basis for a fuller understanding of the presentations.

A list of selected additional readings also is included for each presentation, for those who wish to read or examine the subject in greater depth. Four other official documents, available from the U.S. Government Printing Office, are also recommended and have been used as source material for the readings and the presentations. They are:

United States Foreign Policy for the 1970's--Shaping A Durable Peace, a Report by President Richard Nixon to the Congress, May 3, 1973.

United States Foreign Policy 1972, a Report of the
Secretary of State to the Congress, April 19, 1973
(Department of State Publication 8699).

Statement of Secretary of Defense Elliot L. Richardson
before the Senate Armed Services Committee on the
FY 1974 Defense Budget and FY 1974-1978 Program,
March 28, 1973.

[ocr errors]

United States Military Posture for FY 1974, Statement
by Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff before the Senate
Committee on Appropriations, March 1973.

Written transcripts and visual aids for the presentations are not available. However, tape recordings of the presentations are available on request to the Industrial College and if blank tape is provided. A sample request is shown at the end of this book.

Films used also are not available from the Industrial College. However, the film schedule distributed at the Seminar indicates the sources to which requests for films can be made.

You are invited and encouraged to attend each presentation during the Seminar, and to participate in the question periods and discuss the subject matter with the faculty members.
