WITNESS NANCY DOMENICI, MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, NATIONAL ALLIANCE FOR THE MENTALLY ILL Mr. NATCHER. Our first witness this morning is Ms. Domenici. Come around, Mrs. Domenici. You have appeared before our committee on several occasions and it is a pleasure to have you back. As I have said to you on more than one occasion-and I delight in being able to tell you again-your husband is one of the best Senators serving in the United States Senate. We will be glad to hear from you this morning. Mrs. DOMENICI. Mr. Chairman, I wanted to say that I have appeared here before and I have seen you several times. In fact, I think you almost know my whole wardrobe by now, but I would like for you to pretend that I am not speaking as me this morning, but rather for a lot of other folks that are not here. We, and I think most of them, are well aware of the fact that you have consistently benefited people with severe mental illness. Last year it was a pleasure for Pete and I to be at the reception when you were presented with the first annual Silvio Conte Public Service Award and we are so proud of the things you have done another time in the last year, in October. This afternoon, there is an exciting conference where 10 Senators and 5 Representatives will meet. You probably are aware of this meeting. It may settle a historic agreement where differences in two bills will help lead to favorable legislation that will return the National Institutes of Mental Health to the world renowned disease-oriented National Institutes of Health. At the same time, this program for service systems for people with severe mental illness in this legislation will be raised to a new high agency with its own single mission, and we look forward to working with this subcommittee on (1769) |
