In 1963, U. S. smokers consumed a record 524 billion cigarettes--3 per-
cent more than in 1962. This compares with an increase of only a little more
than 1 percent a year earlier. Cigarette consumption per capita (18 years old
and over) rose 2 percent above 1962 and 1961--2 years of virtually no change.
