JOHNSON, U.S. AIR FORCE, COMMANDER IN CHIEF, UNITED STATES TRANSPORTATION COMMAND INTRODUCTION Mr. MURTHA. The Committee will come to order. We welcome to the Committee today General Hansford T. Johnson, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Transportation Command. I saw a picture on the front page of the Post yesterday that showed HEMTT trucks going in one direction and prisoners going the other direction. That, to me, epitomizes what this war is all about-logistics. No country in the history of the world has moved so far with so much so quickly and with so much expertise. I compliment your organization and for the tremendous job you have done. You couldn't have done it without the help of this Committee because we put the SL-7's in, which I know you used extensively. They worked very well and were essential to the initial deployment. I understand the Maritime Prepositioned Ships also worked well. We are just proud of the job you did. I talked to General Pagonis both times I was in Saudi Arabia and he was really convinced that all the training and time that he had was well spent, and all the equipment was coming together to make this whole operation possible. We would like to hear how it went and what you expect to happen in the future and what we need to have in order to continue to have the ability to respond to a crisis like this in the future.
