TWO COMMON DISEASES OF BLACKS FACTS ABOUT SICKLE CELL ANEMIA AND GLUCOSE-6-PHOSPHATE DEHYDROGENASE DEFICIENCY by BLACK MEDICAL STUDENTS SUMMER, 1971 ΤΟ TUNISIA IMANI (THE BEAUTIFUL SISTER ON THE COVER) AND THE BLACK HOSPITAL AND MEDICAL SCHOOL WORKERS FOR PROVIDING VIVID EXAMPLES OF YOUNG PREFACE This brochure, entitled Two Common Diseases of Blacks, is written primarily as a source of information about Sickle Cell Anemia and Glucose 6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) Deficiency. It is the hope of the authors that this material will serve as an introduction for those who are unaware of these diseases as well as providing a reliable source of reference for those laymen who are already familiar with them. The necessity for an intensified effort to educate Blacks about these diseases has provided the primary stimulus for preparing this brochure. It should be emphasized that this brochure is prepared essentially for the lay reader; therefore, we will not list a bibliography. However, we are indebted to Dr. Roland B. Scott of Howard University College of Medicine, Washington, D.C. for providing us with valuable material that aided us tremendously in developing the format of this brochure. Also, the authors feel strongly indebted to the Black Panther Party and Dr. Bert Small for providing the initial stimulus through their Intercommunal News Service and their efforts to provide free Sickle Cell tests at the George Jackson Health Clinic in Oakland and other clinics across the country.
