The Flattops is a superb wilderness area, laced with lakes and streams and a fishing and hunting paradise. The frosting on the cake is the South Fork of the White River, probably the finest high altitude stream in Colorado. From the alpine meadows near its source, through the long canyon torrent it carries a major flow past innumerable trout filled pools and beaver colonies. The 212,716 acre region is the minimum that should be considered.

The Eagles Nest Area is completely different; it appeals to the rugged mountain climbers and deep wilderness backpackers. But even they and the bighorn sheep need the lower creek and forested areas. It's pretty hard to camp on the side of a mountain, and even harder to catch a trout there for dinner. The proposed 125,000 acre region should be adopted.

The size and beauty of the Weminuche makes it the most important Wilderness in Colorado. The Colorado Citizen's Coalition has given carefully reasoned justification for each proposed addition to the Forest Service proposal of 346,833 acres.

We can see no reason not to adopt all of these areas for the full 440,000 acres recommended by the Colorado Fish, Game, and Parks Commission.

Please enter this in the record for the Senate Field Hearing on S.707, S.1863, and $1864.

Respectfully yours,

KAREN NICKEY,

Conservation Comm. Chairman,

SENATOR DOMINICK: Please have this letter included as part of the hearing record for the proposed Flat Tops Wilderness.

We endorse S. 702 to preserve a wilderness of at least 212,700 acres in the Flat Tops region. In addition we support the inclusion of the Patterson Creek and Trout Creek sections to insure as complete protection as possible for this

area.

Sincerely,

Mr. & Mrs. ROBERT DRISGILL. ENGLEWOOD, COLO., June 8, 1973.

Senator PETER DOMINICK,
U.S. Senate,

Washington, D.C.:

I ask that this statement be included in the official hearing record on the Weminuche-Gore-Eagles Nest, Flattops Wilderness Area.

This unspoiled and diverse area puts man in a better position to understand the reason for his existence. A moment of solitude, a chance to see wildlife, in natural surroundings, the challenge of climbing a mountain, photography these areas have all these to offer and most important, the opportunity to go to this area and regain sanity, a place of retreat from this dirty, smelly, noisy, chaotic city.

I support maintaining the three-quarters of a million acres as existing primitive wilderness areas.

We need more wilderness areas not less as our National Parks are tending toward reservation basis.

Sincerely

VIRGINIA ALLEN.

MY DEAR SENATOR DOMINICK: It has been brought to my attention of the hearings on Colorado wilderness proposals concerning S. 702, S. 1863, and S. 1864.

I wish to make my opinion known, and ask that my letter be made part of the hearing record.

I am in favor of S. 702, but would like Patterson Creek and Trout CreekMandall Lake units be included for a total Flat Top Wilderness of 235,000

acres.

I am strongly in favor of S. 1863 which includes some very important areas which the Forest Service had omitted.

I am also in favor of S. 1864 which I understand includes lower elevations with a wider variety of wild life and other wilderness use.

My husband and I have lived in Colorado for about 10 years and find it more and more losing some of its wild natural beauty, which was one of its drawing powers when we decided to live here.

Day after day we receive telephone calls of new developments, in the mountain areas. We must keep some of the beauty of Colorado, which is found nowhere else.

Please do all you can to help these bills. I hope my letter will be of some help.

Sincerely yours,

SALLIE E. DUFF.

DEAR SENATOR DOMINICK: I would like to express my opinions regarding your forthcoming Senate Sub-committee on Public Lands Hearing which is to begin June 11, 1973, in Denver, Colorado. I would like to have my statements made part of the Hearing record.

I wish to earnestly and wholeheartedly support Senate Bill #702 to establish a Flat Tops Wilderness Area and I would like to specifically recommend that the Patterson Creek and Trout Creek-Mandall Lakes units be included in this bill for a total of 235,000 acres. I also wish to express my strong support for Senate Bill #1863 for the Weminuche Wilderness Area and also Senate Bill #1864 for the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area.

I have backpacked and climbed extensively in these areas, particularly the Weminuche and Eagles Nest Areas and am quite familiar with the delicate ecology of these areas. They express some of the best that Colorado has to offer in the way of scenery, and I can only hope that the majority of the people will have the foresight to preserve these areas in a Wilderness status. Thank you for your kind attention in letting me express myself on these bills. I remain,

Most sincerely yours,

CARLTON M. DEAN, M.D.

DEAR SENATOR: I support the larger Wilderness areas as proposed by the Wilderness Society and others for Eagles Nest, Weminuche and Flat Tops wilderness proposals.

Senator PETER DOMENICK,
Senate Office Building,
Washington, D.C.

DEAR SENATOR: I am writing you in support of S. 702 to establish Flat Tops Wilderness, S. 1863 to establish Weminuche Wilderness, and S. 1864 to establish Eagles Nest Wilderness.

I attended the hearing in Denver, Colorado on June 11, 1973. Inasmuch as the total area involved is a minute percentage of our public land, the statements of those opposing the proposed wilderness areas on the grounds of an undesirable effect on our economy, seem to me to be without validity.

I strongly support the Flat Tops Wilderness Area as proposed in S. 702 with the addition of Patterson Creek, Trout Creek-Mandall Lakes, and White River Meadows.

The area proposed in S. 1863 for inclusion in the Weminuche Wilderness Area is the finest wilderness area left in Colorado.

I am also in total agreement with the proposed Eagles Nest Wilderness as delineated in S. 1864.

I wish this statement to be made a part of the hearing record.
Sincerely yours,

HENRY D. TEFFT, JR.

DENVER, COLO., June 19, 1973.

DEAR SENATOR DOMINICK: I am writing you concerning the three wilderness areas covered in recent public hearings. I would like you to know I support the following:

Senate Bill 1864 to establish an Eagles Nest Wilderness Area, as written. Senator Bill 1863 to establish a Weminuche Wilderness Area, but with the addition of the 17,158 acres endorsed by the Colorado Division of Wild life.

Senate Bill 702 to establish a Flattops Wilderness Area, but with the inclusion of the 12,000 acres near Patterson Creek and 8,000 acres near Mandell Lakes.

Further, I would like my support of the above to become part of the hearing record, as I was unable to attend the hearings. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely

RICHARD CHWARSKY.

DEAR SENATOR DOMINICK: The support of Senate Bills S. 1863, S. 1864 and S. 702 will be appreciated.

As a member of the Conservation Club of the Colorado Federation of Women's Clubs, I have given some thought and study to the Colorado wilderness proposals. It is my opinion that we should keep and improve these areas. They are valuable and cannot be replaced.

Civilization has already destroyed or used many of our wilderness areas for commercial purposes. Let's think ahead and preserve that which is left. Thanking you for your cooperation, I am

Hon. PETER DOMINICK,

DEAR SENATOR DOMINICK: I am very interested in the protection and conservation of our wild areas. I hope that you will give your full support to wilderness bills S. 702, S. 1863 and S. 1864. I feel that the specified acreage should not be cut and that the bills should be passed as they are. Please include this letter in the hearing record.

Sincerely yours,

Senator PETER DOMINICK,
Senate Office Building,
Washington, D.C.

DEAR SIR: I wish to have this letter made part of the hearing record for the Colorado Wilderness proposals being brought before the Senate Subcommittee on Public Lands.

Having recently experienced irreplaceable beauty of the Weminuche Wilderness, I strongly urge that Bill S. 1863 be passed to preserve it in its entirety for others to enjoy. Bills S.702 and S. 1864 should likewise be passed to maximize these wilderness areas.

Sincerely,

M. M. WINSTROM, M.D. SOMERVILLE, N.J., July 11, 1973.

Senator PETER H. DOMINICK,

Senator FLOYD HASKELL,

U.S. Senate,

Washington, D.C.

GENTLEMEN: Senate Bill 702 creating the Flat Tops Wilderness Area will adversely affect the Sweet Water Project of the Rocky Mountain Power Company, if passed.

A key area in the Rocky Mountain Power Company development is the south fork of the White River. The Meadows Dam and Reservoir is of key importance to power development in the area, water resources conservation, recreation and development of oil shale deposits. The south fork was not included in previous recommendations by the Forest Service and should be eliminated from the area covered by Senate Bill 702.

Very truly yours,

COUNTY CLERK AND RECORDER,
Creede, Colo., June 13, 1973.

Hon. PETER DOMINICK,
Senate Office Building,

Washington, D.C.

DEAR SENATOR DOMINICK: I am W. W. Wyley, a County Commissioner from Mineral County, Colorado. The residents of Mineral County know of my personal interest in establishing wilderness areas. I feel that my thoughts on wilderness conservation reflect the thoughts of most of the people of this county as I have just been re-elected to my fourth four year term of office.

To determine the economic value of the use of wilderness and semi-wilderness areas in this district, one only need to check the business houses in Creede, the County Seat of Mineral County. During the tourist season every business house in Creede is open, doing a good business. When our tourist are not in the area over 50% of the business houses are closed.

Mineral County has a need for multiple use Forest areas, but a greater need for designated Wilderness areas, protected, as such, for future use.

I strongly urge that your recommendation for the Weminuche Wilderness correspond with that made by the Wilderness Society and the Colorado Open Space Council.

Respectfully submitted to be recorded as a part of the hearing.

W. W. WYLEY.

Re Weminuche Wilderness.

Hon. PETER H. DOMINICK,
Senate Office Building,

Washington, D.C.

DEAR SENATOR DOMINICK: As a resident of the Western Slope of Colorado, I would like to express my concern for maintaining the wilderness as it still exists within our state. I realize that we cannot place all of our land in a wilderness area, as we continue to need minerals and recreation which are not compatible with wilderness use, but it does seem to me that the Weminuche
