THE CHIEF JUSTICE said: Today's Order List includes the announcement of the appointment of Mr. L. Ralph Mecham as the Director of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts succeeding Mr. William E. Foley, who retired in March of this year. Mr. Mecham will assume the duties of the Office of Director, July 15, 1985. We note for the record our appreciation of the excellent service of Joseph Spaniol as Acting Director since the retirement of Mr. Foley. I am also authorized to announce the retirement of the Clerk of the Supreme Court of the United States, Mr. Alexander Stevas, as of July 31, 1985. I speak for all the members of the Court, the staff of the Court, and for the Bar of the Court in thanking Mr. Stevas for his dedicated service and in wishing him much happiness and good health in the years ahead.
