GENERAL STATEMENT

Senator HILL. All right, Doctor, address yourself now to the special foreign currency.

Mr. MCMURRIN. Public Law 86-480 authorizes the use of foreign currencies derived from the sale of surplus agricultural commodities abroad for scientific research and promotion and support of educational and cultural development.

An amount of $400,000 is requested for fiscal year 1963 for the purchase of currencies to make extensive studies in depth of certain aspects of education in Israel, Pakistan, and Yugoslavia; and to develop new research projects in the areas of talent, development of reading, and child development in India, Israel, and Poland.

Included in the appropriation requested is an amount of $22,800 which will be used to reestablish the projects for scanning, translation, purchase, and shipment of published materials initiated during 1961 in Burma, Indonesia, Poland, and Yugoslavia.

The research activities carried on under this program supplement and complement regular activities of the Office of Education. They will strengthen the educational system of the United States by helping to meet the demand for meaningful, current reports on educational developments, and by adding significantly to educational and scientific knowledge in the United States through the development of new knowledge about the human learning process in people of different racial and cultural backgrounds.

This concludes, Mr. Chairman, our entire testimony.

Senator HILL. We certainly want to thank you and the members of your staff for this very splendid and informative, and interesting presentation which you made here this morning. We indeed are grateful to you.

Mr. MCMURRIN. Thank you, Mr. Chairman. It has been a real privilege for us and I want to say a personal privilege, sir, to be before your committee.

Senator HILL. We are always glad to have you here. Thank you very much.

The committee will now stand in recess.

(Whereupon, at 12 noon, Friday, March 16, 1962, the committee adjourned to reconvene Monday, April 9, 1962.)
