OF CAMBRIDGE AT THE UNIVERSITY PRESS 53 PREFACE The present book is designed to be a reader in and a guide to modern German thought since the Aufklärung. It is meant primarily for the use of advanced pupils and students, and to serve as a companion to the thoughtful reading of German literature in general and of belleslettres in particular. The arrangement of the book is a mosaic consisting of select passages from the masterpieces of German prose. It is a compound picture, but none the less it is composed of precious material alone. The introduction, which is a summary of the history of modern German thought, is intended to form a frame to it. W. R. S. July 1926 C40436 |
