PRESIDENT: Your Committee on Public Buildings other than Prison Buildings respectfully asks permission for a sub-committee of three of said committee to visit the Asylum for the Insane at Agnews during the adjournment of the Senate, from Friday, January sixteenth, until Monday, January nineteenth inst.

Inasmuch as it appears that each of the twenty-seven Republican Senators have a clerk at a per diem of five dollars, and the twelve Democratic Senators are denied the convenience of a clerk; and, inasmuch as the Democratic Senators are not presumed to have the scholarly attainments and culture of the Republican Senators; and, inasmuch as they may be compelled to submit many minority reports, in the preparation of which the services of a clerk are essential; therefore, be it

Resolved, That each of the Democratic Senators be allowed a clerk at a per diem of three dollars, to be paid out of the Contingent Fund of the Senate.

CORRECTION OF JOURNAL.

Senator Heacock asked unanimous consent to correct the Journal of January sixth, on page six of the printed Journal, in reference to his amendment to the resolution appointing W. C. Whitman Messenger to Committee on Elections.

Granted.

Senator Heacock then moved that said amendment be corrected by striking out the words "said committee was in session," and insert "required by said committee in."

So ordered.

REPORTS OF SPECIAL COMMITTEES.

ON EXAMINATION OF VAULT FOR ARCHIVES.

We, the undersigned Special Committee, appointed to confer with the Secretary of State in reference to the advisability of completing the vault for the storage of the archives of the State in the basement of the Capitol building, respectfully report:

That in company with the Secretary of State and W. C. Hendricks, ex-Secretary of
State, and Mr. McGuire, the contractor who constructed the vault, made a personal
examination of the above named vault and the surroundings, and find:
First-We consider the vault fire-proof and burglar-proof.

Second-We consider the vault to be water-proof under all circumstances, except in the case of a general flood.

Third--We recommend the completion of the vault, and would also recommend that the means of access to the same should be altered and remodeled to increase the facility of using the same.
