FOREWORD This report provides an overview of hazardous waste management practices in the United States. The primary focus is on hazardous wastes as defined in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Superfund program. In addition to a description of the current system, discussions are provided of the potential impacts of current regulatory and other initiatives. This is a summary report which draws from more detailed, ongoing investigations. It is anticipated that the report will be updated periodically as new information becomes available. It is also possible that the report may be expanded in the future to include more discussion of related statutes and waste systems. We hope that this report, and its subsequent revisions, will serve as a focal point for discussions of future directions in the hazardous waste management area.
