Washington, D.C. The committee met at 2 p.m., pursuant to notice, in room 4232, New Senate Office Building, Hon. Harrison A. Williams, Jr. (chairman) presiding.

The CHAIRMAN. Our meeting will come to order.

The Committee on Labor and Public Welfare is meeting this afternoon to hear from nominees whose names have been submitted to the Senate by the President.

We will first hear from Dr. Merlin K. DuVal, who has been nominated by the President to be Assistant Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare for health and scientific affairs.

Dr. DuVal is a native of New Jersey, and presently resides in Arizona where he has been Dean of the University of Arizona College of Medicine since 1964. He comes to us with a most impressive background. I will order that a copy of Dr. DuVal's biography, the public law that created his position, and other pertinent material dealing with his office be printed in the record at this point.
