The subcommittee will come to order. We continue our hearings on the budget for the Department of Health and Human Services this morning with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We are very pleased to welcome the new Director, Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan. Dr. Koplan was with CDC for many years and then became President of the Prudential Center for Health Care Research in Atlanta and now, after four years in the private sector, he is back at CDC as the new Director. We welcome you this morning and look forward to your testimony. Why don't you introduce the people who are with you and then proceed. Dr. KOPLAN. With me is Mr. Bill Gimson from CDC, Mr. Dennis Williams from the Department of Health and Human Services. OPENING STATEMENT Thank you, Mr. Chairman and good morning to you and Mr. Bonilla, Mr. Cunningham, the people here. I am Jeff Koplan. I am pleased to be here today to speak to you for the first time as Director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As Mr. Porter indicated, I was at CDC for 22 years, retired in '94 convinced that I would not return to government or the CDC. I am humbled to realize that I have returned. I couldn't miss the opportunity to lead this premier public health agency. It was an opportunity I could not refuse. For the past 5 years in the private sector, I have gained experience and knowledge that I think confirms my belief that the private and public sector, working together, have a mutual interest in preventing disease and injury.
