The White House Conference on Aging has provided a range of guidelines which can help lead to improvement in the well-being of our rapidly growing older population. The Conference reports, of which this is one, also point the way toward making the added years of life a period of continuing contribution to community and social welfare.

The Department and the Federal Government owe a debt of gratitude to those uncounted thousands of Americans who labored in every State to make the Conference a success, as well as to those who contributed their dedicated and energetic leadership-the State governors and officials, the key personnel of participating national organizations, the Chairman and members of the National Advisory Committee, and the former Secretary and Under Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare. I am confident that all of these will be rewarded by the satisfaction of seeing many of the Conference findings ultimately transformed into tangible benefits that will bring more successful living for older Americans throughout our land.
