The subcommittee met, pursuant to notice at 2 p.m. in the courtroom, Gallatin County Courthouse, Bozeman, Mont. Present: Senators Moss (presiding) and Metcalf. Also present: Porter Ward, professional staff member. Some of you still have to check in, I guess, with the clerk, but this can be done while we proceed. We have only a limited time this afternoon, and, therefore, I want to start on time and want to proceed expeditiously. This is the time duly noticed and set for a hearing by the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Public Lands on Senate bill 1849, the bill to designate certain lands in the Gallatin and Beaverhead National Forests in Montana as wilderness. This bill, which was introduced by Senator Metcalf, on behalf of himself, and Senator Mansfield, would designate about 113,000 acres as the Spanish Peaks Wilderness. The Secretary of Agriculture would administer the area. The area is located on the Madison Mountain Range about 25 miles south of Bozeman. Much of it is covered with timber and interspersed with grassy ridges and mountain meadows. There is an abundance of wildlife with good hunting and fishing in a rugged country of rushing streams and a score of peaks more than 10,000 feet in elevation. The proposed wilderness is located within 200 miles of the six largest cities in Montana, which are: Missoula, Great Falls, Bozeman, Butte, Helena, and Billings. This area is very beautiful country. I know I am going to enjoy learning more about it in the hearing today. I direct that a text of the bill S. 1849 appear at this point in the record: (The document referred to follows:) |
