Schedule of general investigations program, fiscal years 1956 and 1957-Columbia Basin
Investigation of ground-water potential as source of irrigation water to supply 5,000 acres of new land and supplement supplies to 15,000 acres. A special evaluation report will be completed during fiscal year 1956 and sub- mitted to landowners of the area. Stream gaging only will be continued in fiscal year 1957. Any further studies will be dependent upon desires of landowners after review of the report.
Reconnaissance study to be made to determine extent of basin or project studies desirable. Inspection of Coeur d'Alene, St. Joe, and St. Maries drainage basins in Idaho will be included in the study as well as presently dry areas in Spokane Valley area in Washington. Some 25,000 acres of new lands are involved.
The Clark Fork River is one of the larger tributaries of the Columbia River having large undeveloped storage and power potentialities. In addition, the basin includes large areas of potentially irrigable land as well as areas in need of supplemental water supplies. A basin wide study and report should be continued to inventory the land and water resources and present a pattern for logical development. The investigation also will delineate areas for detailed studies where feasible developments appear possible in the near future. A basin report is scheduled for the end of fiscal year 1958.
Schedule of general investigations program, fiscal years 1956 and 1957-Columbia Basin-Continued
Funds are required for Columbia River Basin studies for comprehensive plans, particularly for power and flood control, for important Army and Reclamation dams in operation and under construction or authorized; and in connection with Reclamation's responsi- bilities stemming from the Army-Interior agreement on comprehensive development of the Columbia River Basin, and also partici- pation in the coordination and planning of the Columbia Basin Interagency Committee. In fiscal year 1957, funds are also included for work in cooperation with the Corps of Engi- neers in bringing up to date its comprehensive report on the basin.
Investigation scheduled to be undertaken in fiscal year 1957 to develop an irrigation plan to fit into an overall comprehensive plan of development for the basin, and to fit the plans of the United States in with those of Canada in an international plan of development, studies for which are now under way. 544, 792 Investigation in progress. The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate the undeveloped land and water supply potential of the upper Snake River Basin and arrive at a comprehen- sive multipurpose development plan. The amount and distribution of water supply available for irrigation of new lands and as a supplemental supply for the lands that are now inadequately irrigated will be covered. Domestic supplies, flood control, power pro- duction, and other multipurpose uses and the integrated use of new facilities with reser- voirs already in operation will be studied. Ground-water reservoirs of the basin are another source of additional water supply to
Upper and Middle Snake River Basin.
Idaho-Wyoming.. 1, 000, 000
Region 1: Bruneau River project.
Collection of water supply data in progress. Investigation to be started in fiscal year 1957 to determine feasibility of irrigation of 80,000 acres of new land.
21, 165 Public Law 577 passed in 1952 reauthorized the Chief Joseph Dam project to include irriga- tion among its multiple purposes. Con- struction of this dam is now nearing comple- tion. Several areas in the vicinity of the dam have an irrigation potential that should be studied. In fiscal year 1956, studies on the Greater Wenatchee division will be com- pleted; this division could provide a full water supply to about 9,000 acres of land and a supplemental supply to 1,650 acres. Studies will be initiated on the Okanogan-Simil- kameen division to develop a plan for serving irrigation water to about 7,200 acres of new land and providing supplemental water to about 19,800 acres now suffering from chronic shortages which threaten to become worse due to upstream developments in Canada. In fiscal year 1957, studies of the Okanogan- Similkameen division will be completed and studies of the Chelan division to serve about 2,000 acres of new land and 3,800 acres of presently irrigated land and the Alameda unit of the Shoreline pumping division to serve about 2,000 acres of new land should be started.
Reconnaissance of area has been made. Studies started in fiscal year 1955 to determine feasi- bility of providing irrigation water to about 10,000 acres of land as the initial development of an overall area of 80,300 acres. Report scheduled for completion in fiscal year 1957.
tigation started in fiscal year 1955 to examine possibilities of developing about 4,400 acres of new land. Report scheduled for comple- tion in fiscal year 1957.
Investigation scheduled to be resumed in fiscal year 1956 to develop plans to provide a firm water supply to about 4,000 acres of land now badly in need of late season irrigation. Investigation, which has strong local support, would be completed early in fiscal year 1958. Reconnaissance of area has been made. Studies started in fiscal year 1955 to determine feasibility of providing supplemental water to about 6,000 acres of land. Report scheduled for completion in fiscal year 1957. Investigation in progress to determine feasi- bility of providing needed supplemental water to 3,300 acres of land and providing a full supply to about 5,800 acres of land by pumping from pool behind McNary Dam. Report will be completed during fiscal year 1956. 47, 383 Investigation to develop plan for the irrigation of some 41,000 acres of new land scheduled to be started in fiscal year 1957. Area is in need of late summer irrigation water to insure maximum yield from land. Water would be obtained from storage on Molalla River.
Investigation to be started and completed in fiscal year 1956. The construction of a re- regulating reservoir below Palisades would increase power value at Palisades by per- mitting unrestricted peaking, provide a means for closely controlling the irrigation releases, provide for generation of 45,000 kilowatts of additional power, and enhance fishing and recreation.
7,150 Reconnaissance of area made. Investigation to determine plan for the development of 3,000 acres of new land by diversion from pool behind existing McNary Dam scheduled to be undertaken in fiscal year 1957.
Proposed report on this project completed. Completion of final report scheduled for fiscal year 1956. Plan would provide a full irrigation supply to some 35,500 acres of dry land.
Proposed report has been completed. Small amount of funds required in fiscal year 1956 for preparation of the final report. Project will supply water for about 1,300 acres.
