Answer 23d. Uranium An estimate of reserves under mining claims is not available because the mining claimants are not required under the mining law to submit this information to the government. Coal The estimated coal resources on lands under lease (to 3000 feet of overburden) total 22 billion tons. Information on resources on U.S. public lands is not available, however, in the states where these leaseholds are located total resources to 3000 feet of depth are estimated to be one trillion tons. Oil Shale and Geothermal Steam There are no outstanding leases for these resources. Oil and Gas This resource information is not available. 23e. The following table shows the proportion of the total number and acreage of leases or claims actually under commercial production. 23 f. The number and acreage by kind, of permits or leases expiring or subject to review in each of the next 10 years is not readily available. To obtain this information would require a check of lease files in each land office in the Bureau. Question 24. For each energy resource, for the years 1953-1971 and by region (for coal, subdivide by state), summarize the production and value of production from U.S. public lands. Compare these amounts of total production and value of production in the U.S. Answer 24. For OCS oil and gas see table 24. Onshore The following tables delineate according to the ten Federal Common Regional Boundaries Federal production and value of production of onshore oil and gas, and coal (coal is further subdivided by state) for the years 1953-1971. These amounts are compared to the total production and value of production in the United States for those products and years for which the data is available. Federal leases for geothermal steam and oil shale have not been issued to date. Competitive lease sales for these two resources are being considered for December, 1972. Table 24 (a) shows the Federal Common Regional Boundaries. Uranium Table 24 (b) shows the U.S. Uranium Production from Public Land, compared with total production, 1953-1971. Table 24(c) shows the 1953-1971 U.S. production and value from public lands and percent of total value derived from public lands. Oil and Gas Table 24 (c) shows the respective oil and gas production and value of production from public lands. Table 24 (d) is a comparison of the public lands production to the total U.S. production for those products and years for which the data was available. Data was not available for value of total U.S. production. Coal Table 24 (e) is a comparison of the coal production.
