Establishment of a Task Group to Determine
Criteria for Defining Categories of Medical
Items

Reference: MED/NPS Supply Management Charter Effective
June 30, 1974, paragraph 4b (3).

1.

Purpose. To establish criteria by which medical items can be categorized in order to make purchasing assignments in a manner that will preclude overlap and duplication.

2.

Scope. The activity of the task group will be limited

to the intent of Recommendations 2 and 3a of the Report of the Interagency Committee on an Optimum Procurement and Distribution System for MED/NPS Items.

The task group is to determine criteria for defining categories of medical items for purchasing responsibility purposes. In so doing, the group need not confine its efforts to FSG 65, but should also consider any agreed

upon "families" of items in other groups which are considered medical items.

Composition. The task group consists of representatives from DOD, DHEW, GSA and VA. The leader will be

selected by the task group members.

Each task group

member will be a commodity oriented professional with experience in procuring medical materiel.

Functions. The task group will develop a work plan for Committee approval within 30 days of the effective date of this order. The work plan will target completion in no more than 120 days and will identify key action and expected completion dates. The work plan will identify, to the extent possible, the critical elements to be examined and will as a minimum encompass; specific user requirements of the Government; considerations of Government design or other products control; industrial groupings or practices; standard Federal cataloging relationships.

b. Source Information Data. The task group may consider the following information and other sources in developing its criteria requirements;
