SIR: In accordance with the direction in Senate resolution of February 18, 1871, calling for a report of the claims of the State of Florida, or citizens thereof, now on file and unadjusted" in this Department "arising from losses, damages, or unsettled accounts in the several Indian wars in Florida," I have the honor to transmit herewith a copy of a communication from the Acting Commissioner of Indian Affairs, which contains all the information on the subject in the possession of this Depart ment. I am, sir, very respectfully, your obedient servant, Hon. SCHUYLER COLFAX, President of the Senate. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR, OFFICE OF INDIAN AFFAIRS, Washington, D. C., March 9, 1871. SIR: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt by this office, by reference from your Department, of the resolution of the Senate, dated the 18th ultimo, directing the Secretary of the Interior to report to the Senate "the claims of the State of Florida or citizens thereof, now on file and unadjusted in his Department, arising from losses, damages, or unsettled accounts in the several Indian wars in Florida, together with the names of the claimants, the character and amounts of the respective claims; also, copies of any correspondence between the Department of the Interior and the State of Florida relative to the indebtedness of the United States to the State of Florida, on account of the Indian wars within the State." I beg leave to report that there are no claims of the character described in the first clause of the resolution found to be on file in this Bureau, nor can there be discovered any correspondence of record on file here relative to the "indebtedness" referred to in the latter clause thereof.
