Mr. MCHUGH. For the Water Quality Program you are requesting $13,500,000, an increase of $2,125,000 over the amount available for fiscal year 1992. Would you briefly describe the 16 demonstration projects, and describe what has been done under this program during the past year.

Dr. JOHNSRUD. During 1990 and 1991, 16 demonstration projects representing different sets of agricultural, soil, geologic, and envi

ronmental conditions were implemented to address agricultural nonpoint sources of pollution. The objective of these projects are to demonstrate the effectiveness of selected agricultural production practices in treating specific nonpoint source pollution problems as well as in preventing potential problems and to accelerate adoption of these practices. The demonstration projects are using the best available technology and management practices to illustrate cost effective production while maintaining the integrity of surface and groundwater resources. All 16 demonstration projects are operational and are moving forward to meet their objectives. Exhibit I shows the distribution of the projects, and Exhibit II provides a description of the water quality problems each project is addressing. [The information follows:]
