U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR

Training at higher educational levels and in institutions of higher learning supported by the Department of the Interior include inservice, advanced career, and fellowship programs for forestry and range employees, mining engineers, geologists, cartographers, metallurgists, and specialists in fish and wildlife. The Department of the Interior also cooperates with the Department of State in training programs for foreign technologists and university scholars and, in addition, has responsibility for educating our Eskimo, Aleut, and Indian citizens, including the award of scholarships and Federal fellowships for academic work leading to the baccalaureate or doctoral degree.

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

The Cooperative Extension Service of the Department of Agriculture, operating through the land-grant colleges, has become an educational force toward improvement of the economic welfare, health, and community life of rural families. Besides maintaining this nationwide educational service in cooperation with the States, the Department works closely with the land-grant colleges and other educational institutions in numerous research projects for the advancement of agricultural knowledge.

Higher educational activities, include demonstrations and consultative services, agricultural training of certain foreign nationals and inservice training and supervision of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Graduate School.

DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

Although the primary focus of this Department is on apprenticeship programs and training in the skilled trades, there are opportunities for professional training offered to qualified employees interested in pursuing further academic or specialized education. In addition, the Department of Labor works with the Department of State in its exchange program for foreign nationals and the technical cooperation activities in the field of higher education.

DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY

The higher educational activities of the Department of the Treasury include training persons for the performance of duties in the U.S. Coast Guard, the Bureau of Customs, and the Internal Revenue Service. In addition, all of the bureaus of the Department conduct formal inservice training for technical, managerial, and executive development of qualified personnel. The Department operates the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the U.S. Customs Inservice Training School, and also contracts with certain colleges and universities for academic courses of instruction in its career advancement program.
