S. 2: A bill to appropriate, for a limited time, the proceeds of the sales of the public lands of the United States, and for granting lands to certain States.

[Sec. 2, lines 10-18, among other purposes, provided that: of all the public lands of the United States, wherever situated, which shall have been, or may be sold subsequent to the said 31 days of December, shall be divided among the 26 States of the Union, according to their respective federal representative population, as ascertained by the last census, to be applied to the Legislatures of the said States to education, colonization, internal improvements, or the reimbursement of debt created for internal improvements."]

[Sec. 2, lines 10-122: . of all the public lands of the United States, wherever situated, which shall have been or may be sold subsequent to the said thirty-first day of December, shall be divided among the twenty-six States of the Union and the District of Columbia, according to their respective federal representative population, as ascertained by the last census, to be applied by the Legislatures of the said States to education, internal improvements, the reimbursement of debt created for internal improvements, or such purposes as the said Legislatures may direct: Provided, that the distributive share to which the District of Columbia shall be entitled, shall be applied to free schools, or education in some other form, as Congress may direct. ..."]

S. 1: A bill to grant the right of way and making a grant of land to the State of Iowa, in aid of construction of certain railroads in said State [See action for amendment pertaining to education.] Legislative action: Referred to the Committee of the Whole. Reported (Mar. 16, 1852) with an amendment to provide for the following, among other things: To grant to the States named in this section, for purposes of education and of internal improvement, so much of the public domain as is specified for each (of the 17 States mentioned).

[Sec. 8: No portion of said lands shall be sold at less than $1.25 per acre, until otherwise authorized by a law of the United States, and the net proceeds of the sales of said lands shall be faithfully applied to objects of internal improvement, or to purposes of education, or both, as the legislatures of the States respectively owning the lands granted may direct. .J

S. 28: A bill granting to the State of Michigan the right of way and a donation of public land for the construction of a ship canal around the falls of St. Mary.

Legislative action: Considered in the Committee of the Whole (p. 606). Motion to amend (by providing that the States, Territories, and District "are severally authorized to apply the proceeds of the lands hereby severally granted to each of said States, Territories and District, to the support of schools and for other useful public purposes .") defeated (p. 610).
