Resolve in favor of Elisha W. Shaw, Franklin R. Webber and Byron Porter. Resolved, That the land agent be, and he is hereby authorized to refund to Elisha W. Shaw, Franklin R. Webber and Byron Porter, ninety-nine dollars and twenty cents, with interest from the twentieth day of October, eighteen hundred and seventy-five, it being for money paid by them to the state, for land in the town of Ripley, the title to which has proved defective; provided said Shaw, Webber and Porter shall first re-convey to the state all their right, title and interest in said land.

Agent of Penobscot Indians, for payment of certain rents to.

Chapter 262.

Resolve providing for payment of certain rents, now in suit, to the Agent of the
Penobscot tribe of Indians.

Resolved, That the governor and council be, and hereby are authorized to draw their warrants on the treasurer, from time to time, in favor of the agent of the Penobscot tribe of Indians, for any and all sums collected and paid into the treasury upon suits now pending in the supreme judicial court, in the county of Penobscot, to recover from the several defendants therein, the unpaid rents due in eighteen hundred and seventy-six, upon leases given by said agent to several lessees of the shores of certain islands in the Penobscot river, said sums to be disbursed by said agent according to laws now in force.

Resolved, That chapter one hundred and seventy-five of resolves of eighteen hundred and seventy-six, entitled "Resolve relating to claims of settlers on proprietors' lands," be, and is hereby repealed.

Resolved, That the sum of eight thousand dollars be, and hereby is appropriated for the use of the military and naval asylum at Bath; and that the further sum of five hundred dollars be, and is hereby appropriated, to be expended under the direction of the trustees of the asylum for the building of cisterns or a reservoir.

Chapter 268.

Resolve in favor of Van Buren plantation.

Resolved, That the sum of two hundred dollars be, and is hereby appropriated and paid to the plantation of Van Buren, when the county commissioners of the county of Aroostook shall certify to the state treasurer that a good and substantial bridge has been built over Thibodeau's stream, so called, in said plantation of Van Buren.

Resolved, That there be and hereby is appropriated the sum of ten thousand one hundred fourteen dollars and sixteen cents for the deficiency of eighteen hundred and seventysix; the sum of five hundred and sixty-five dollars for the services of teacher and chaplain, for the year eighteen hundred and seventy-six; the sum of five hundred and fifty dollars for salary of chaplain and teacher for the ensuing year; the sum of one hundred dollars for the purchase of books; and the sum of fifteen thousand dollars for prison

extension.

Resolve in favor of the town of Kingsbury.

Resolved, That the sum of two hundred dollars be, and is hereby appropriated in aid of the town of Kingsbury, in the county of Piscataquis, to be expended under direction of the county commissioners of said county, in building state road leading from Kingsbury Mills to Blanchard.

WHEREAS, The judicial reports, acts and resolves, and Town of Anson, other official documents furnished said town by provision of law, were destroyed by a destructive fire in said town, on the nineteenth day of June, eighteen hundred and seventy-six, therefore,

Resolved, That the state librarian be authorized and instructed to furnish said town with said documents, or such of them as may be in his possession, and can be spared from the state library.

Chapter 272.

Resolve in favor of bridge in the town of Lyndon.

Resolved, That the sum of five thousand dollars be appropriated in aid of the construction of a bridge over the Aroostook river, at Caribou village, in the town of Lyndon, to be expended under the direction of the county commissioners of Aroostook county, provided, however, that not more than one-third part of the actual cost of said bridge shall be paid from the sum appropriated by this resolve, and to be paid when the bridge is completed.

REFORM SCHOOL.-JUDGE OF PROBATE.-SETTLERS' LOTS.

Chapter 274.

Resolve in favor of the Joint Standing Committee on Reform School. Resolved, That the treasurer of state is hereby authorized and directed to pay to Charles B. Jordan, chairman of the joint standing committee on reform school, the sum of fortyone dollars and forty-four cents, the same being for expenses incurred by the committee visiting the reform school, at Cape Elizabeth, and the industrial school, at Hallowell.

Resolve in favor of the State Reform School.

Resolved, That there be and hereby is appropriated the sum of thirteen thousand dollars for the use of the state reform school, to meet the current expenses of the ensuing year, and two thousand dollars for repairs and painting. Approved February 9, 1877.

Chapter 277.

Resolve relating to Settlers' Lots under the Treaty of Washington.

Resolved, That the attorney general be, and hereby is requested to examine the question of the rights of settlers under the treaty of Washington, and report to the next legislature whether the State of Maine is legally or morally held for the payment of any sum or sums for the purpose of quieting the claims of said settlers, and if so, to what amount, and to what party or parties.
