Chapter 128.

Resolve in favor of the Passamaquoddy Indians.

CHAP. 128.

Resolved, That there be paid from the state treasury, to be Passamaquoddy Indians, in favor expended under the direction of the governor and council, to the agent of the Passamaquoddy tribe of Indians, for the benefit of said tribe, as follows: for May dividend, four hundred dollars; for November dividend, three hundred dollars; for distressed poor, twelve hundred dollars; for agricultural purposes, five hundred dollars; for bounty on crops for the year one thousand eight hundred and seventy-six, three hundred dollars; for ploughing, one hundred and fifty dollars; for salary of governors, fifty dollars each; for salary of lieutenant governor, twenty dollars; for wood, to be distributed as follows: one hundred dollars for those at Pleasant point, thirty dollars for those at Pembroke, twenty-five dollars for those at Calais, and forty-five dollars for those at Peter Dana's point; for educational purposes, three hundred dollars; for salary of priest, one hundred dollars; for dressing for land, one hundred dollars; for contingent fund, two hundred dollars; for salary of agent, three hundred dollars; for repairs of priest's house and purchasing stove for chapel at Pleasant point, two hundred dollars; for repairs of chapel and purchasing stove for same at Peter Dana's point, fifty dollars; for plastering hall at Pleasant point, fifty dollars; also fifty dollars on road at Pleasant point.

Chapter 129.

Resolve concerning an Annual Census of the Passamaquoddy tribe of Indians. Resolved, That the agent of the Passamaquoddy tribe of Indians Passamaquoddy Indians, census is hereby directed to take, or cause to be taken, a census of said of tribe each year, before the time of the payment of the May dividends to said tribe, and to report the same in his annual report of said tribe.

Resolved, That the sum of ten dollars be paid to George W. Hewey and Charles L. Hewey, said amount being full compensation for killing two bears in the town of Phillips, Franklin county, one on the thirteenth day, and the other on the twentieth day of October, eighteen hundred and seventy-five.

Resolve in favor of the town of Mayfield.

Resolved, That the land agent be, and is hereby authorized and directed to convey to the town of Mayfield, such interest as the state may have in and to the following lots in said town, viz; lots numbered seven, in range two, and five, in range four, for the benefit of the public schools in said Mayfield.

Resolve in favor of Charles J. Schumacher.

Resolved, That the governor and council be authorized to audit bill of Charles J. Schumacher, of Portland, the same to be paid from the state treasury, the sum of thirty-five dollars, for a painting of State of Maine coat of arms, the same having been placed in the Washington mansion, under the direction of the Ladies National Mt. Vernon Association, together with similar paintings of coats of arms of all the states of the union.

Resolved, That the sum of one thousand dollars be, and hereby Town of Wellingis appropriated, to be expended on that part of the road leading from Athens to Abbott village, which lies in the town of Wellington, under the direction of the county commissioners of Piscataquis county.

Chapter 137.

Resolve in favor of the Joint Standing Committee on Reform School. Resolved, That the state treasurer is hereby authorized and directed to pay to Benjamin F. Sturgis the sum of twenty-nine dollars and ten cents, the same being for expenses incurred by the committee visiting the reform school at Cape Elizabeth, and the industrial school at Hallowell.

Chapter 139.

Resolve making appropriations for the Penobscot Tribe of Indians. Resolved, That there be paid from the state treasury to the agent of the Penobscot tribe of Indians, to be appropriated for the benefit of said tribe as follows: Forty-four hundred and twentynine dollars and seventy cents, amount of interest on their trust fund, held by the state for the benefit of said tribe; eighteen hundred dollars for their annual annuity; eight hundred dollars for agricultural purposes; four hundred dollars for bounty on crops; three hundred dollars for salary of agent; one hundred and fifty dollars to pay competent persons, to be employed by the agent, to assist and instruct said Indians in their agricultural labors, as follows: seventy-five dollars on Oldtown and Orson islands, thirty-seven dollars and fifty cents on Hemlock, Sugar and Olamon islands, thirty-seven dollars and fifty cents on Mattanawcook island, on the same conditions as required by chapter ninety-six of the resolves of eighteen hundred and sixty-seven; and one hundred dollars to be expended exclusively for chapel repairs. The following sums appropriated to be paid from their shore rents: four hundred and fifty dollars for schools, to be used in employing competent teachers, viz: two hundred and fifty dollars on Oldtown island, under the supervision of the superintending school committee of Oldtown; eighty dollars on Olamon island, under the supervision of the superintending school committee of Greenbush; one hundred and twenty dollars on Mattanawcook island, under the supervision of the superintending school committee of Lincoln, and said committees are required to report as directed in resolve approved March seventeenth, eighteen hundred and sixty; and it is the duty of said agent to see that the money is fully expended for the education of the children of said tribe; one hundred dollars for salary of their priest, provided, he says mass at least twenty-four Sundays during the year, with

said tribe of Indians; fifty dollars for salary of their governor; thirty dollars for salary of their lieutenant governor. All the above named sums to be paid under the direction of the governor and council.

Resolve in favor of Samuel C. Greenlow, of Chapman plantation. Resolved, That the land agent be hereby directed to indorse on a note given by C. F. A. Johnson and Phair, April sixteenth, eighteen hundred and seventy-five, for six hundred dollars, payable to the order of Parker P. Burleigh, land agent, the sum of three hundred dollars, and interest on said three hundred dollars since April sixteenth, eighteen hundred and seventy-five. Approved February 18, 1876.

Chapter 142.

Resolve authorizing the warden of the State Prison to loan the use of the State of Maine

fire engine.

Resolved, That the warden of the state prison, with the approval of the inspector, is hereby authorized to loan the State of Maine fire engine to a fire company organized in the town of Thomaston, for its use, upon such conditions and restrictions as will protect the interest of the state, and provided that it shall be located within one mile from the prison.
