APOLLO APPLICATIONS PROGRAM

APOLLO ASSETS

• FACILITIES

- LAUNCH

- TEST

- TRACKING

- MANUFACTURING

• SPACECRAFT

• LAUNCH VEHICLES

• TRAINED PERSONNEL

FIGURE 1.-Apollo Applications Program will use the assets shown to yield safe extended flights to gain scientific knowledge and useful benefits to man. The assets shown will result in relatively lower program cost.

LM VIRTUES

• MANNED

•LARGE PROPULSIVE CAPABILITY

•LARGE PAYLOAD VOLUME

• MISSION VERSATILITY

FIGURE 2.-The attributes listed show the advantage of using a LM vehicle for AAP missions. At least two men can operate vehicle in earth orbit or on the moon with much greater propulsive compatibility than the Gemini vehicle. Payload volumes may be as large as 2,000 cubic feet.

• MINIMUM SPACECRAFT MODIFICATIONS

• UTILIZATION OF OTHER QUALIFIED HARDWARE (e.g., GEMINI) • MINIMUM MODIFICATIONS TO GROUND-SUPPORT EQUIPMENT, ACCEPTANCE CHECKOUT EQUIPMENT, & MANNED SPACE FLIGHT NETWORK

• MAXIMUM OPERATION WITH OTHER ASSOCIATED VEHICLES

• USE OF EXISTING LAUNCH VEHICLES

FIGURE 3.-AAP requirements heavily emphasize the use of existing systems to permit maximum reliability and safety at lowest cost.

FIGURE 5.-Close interface with the astronauts is a paramount requirement for AAP. Astronauts Lt. Cdr. Alan Bean, Major Joe Engle, and Dr. Owen Garriott are shown during an indoctrination on the Full Mission Engineering Simulator. Tests have been run demonstrating the suitability of LM-A.

FIGURE 8.-The artist's rendition of the LM/ATM shows the ascent stage (LM-A) attached to the Rack. The four extended arms are the solar cell panels that will power the ATM. The cylindrical extension from the bottom of the vehicle is the ATM experiment package, which is approximately 7 feet in diameter.

FIGURE 9.-Artist's concept shows the Orbital Assembly in operation. The LM/ ATM is radially docked to the Multiple Docking Adapter and the CSM is axially docked. The Airlock Module extends from the Orbital Workshop.
