Res. 225 (74th Cong.) and S. Res. 7 (75th Cong.)] PART 1 A special committee of five Members of the Senate, appointed pursuant to S. Res. 225, to Investigate Campaign Expenditures of the Various Presidential and Vice-Presidential Candidates, and Candidates for the United States Senate, submits the following report: S. Res. 225 was enacted on April 1, 1936. Under its authority, the President of the Senate, John N. Garner, on April 14, 1936, appointed the following committee to conduct the inquiry provided for by said resolution: Messrs. Augustine Lonergan, of Connecticut, chairman; Sherman Minton, Indiana; Lewis B. Schwellenbach, Washington; Warren R. Austin, Vermont; and Robert M. La Follette, Jr., Wisconsin. On September 18, 1936, Senator La Follette submitted his resignation as a member of the committee, because of his acceptance of the chairmanship of the Progressive National Committee supporting Roosevelt for President, whose activities he thought would conflict with those of the special investigating committee. The President of the Senate, Mr. Garner, thereupon appointed Senator Lynn J. Frazier, North Dakota, to fill the position held by Senator La Follette. Senators Lonergan, Minton, and Schwellenbach are members of the Democratic Party, and Senators Austin and Frazier are Republicans. Pursuant to said resolution, the committee held meetings in Washington, D. C., on June 22, June 29, August 31, November 9, December 15, 1936, and on January 4, January 27 and February 20, 1937 |
