These 17 companies had 340 directors in all, an average of 20 per company. The 340 directors had directorships in 2,120 companies, including the particular life insurance company of which he was a director, an average of over six directorates per man. The information is for the year 1948 and was compiled from Poor's Register of Directors and Executives, 1949, published by Standard & Poor's Corp., New York. Directorships held on the boards of nonprofit foundations, organizations, and institutions are not included. However, directorships on boards of trade associations and other business associations are included. The insurance companies in this study are listed in a Legislative Reference Service study of "100 Corporations in the United States With Assets Over 500 Million Dollars: 1947.” This study ranks these corporations according to asset size within the following groups: Banking, insurance, manufacturing, public utilities, and railroads. 1.
