According to the Alaska Population Projections published by the Alaska Department of Labor in 1986, the high series population projections estimate the following numbers of preschool, elementary, middle, high school, and post-secondary age Alaskans for the year 1990 out of a total projected population of 607,030. School age 5 17 year olds in Alaska by the projected to number 121,186, approximately 20% population. For Alaskan cities and boroughs in 1987, the cost per pupil was $6,076. ་ For the Regional Educational Attendance Areas, the cost of education per pupil was $11,159. There are 55 school districts in Alaska. 32 of these are city and borough school districts. 23 are Regional Educational Attendance Areas. As of July 1988, there are 6,372 teachers in Alaska.
