The laws relating to the military service published in the Army Regulations, edition of 1881, were copied from the second edition (1878) of the Revised Statutes, which was a republication of the first edition, with changes made by Congress prior to the Forty-fifth Congress. The changes were indicated in the second edition as follows :

The portions of the statutes repealed are printed in italics and included in brackets, and the new matter introduced is printed in the ordinary roman letter and also included

in brackets.

II..The following table exhibits the sections of the Revised Statutes relating to the military service which are altered, affected, or repealed by legislation of the Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses, and prior to December 5, 1881. The references are to pages of volume 1, supplement to the Revised Statutes:
