By direction of the Secretary of War paragraph 200 of the Regulations (amended by General Orders, No. 15, February 3, 1882, from this office) is further amended to read as follows:

200. The following are the books to be kept with a company: The Company Book, the Morning Report Book, the Letter Book, and the Sick Report, all to be furnished by the Adjutant General of the Army.[Regs. 1863, ¶ 127; G. O. 75, 1870.]

1. On or before the first day of January, 1883, a supply of the three first-named books (recently adopted) will be furnished every company organization in the Army, and on that date the books will be opened and kept according to forms therein

2. Should the requirements of the service demand a new supply of any of the books now in use-i. e., Descriptive Book, Clothing Book, Order Book, Morning Report Book, Company Sick Book-by reason of the current book having been used to its limit or likely to be so completed prior to the 1st January, 1883, requisition will be made by the company commander in the usual manner upon the Quartermaster's Department, and be supplied from the stock now on hand, except for the Company Sick Book, which is furnished by the Adjutant General.

The following is the detail for the recruiting service for the period from ctober 1, 1882, to October 1, 1884:

Colonel Wesley Merritt, 5th Cavalry, will relieve Colonel Thomas H. eill, 8th Cavalry, as Superintendent of the Mounted Recruiting Service: ation at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.

Major John A. Wilcox, 8th Cavalry, will report in person to the Superinndent of the Mounted Recruiting Service for duty at Jefferson Barracks, issouri, to relieve Major John Green, 1st Cavalry.

Colonel William R. Shafter, 1st Infantry, will be relieved from duty the Department of Arizona as soon as his services can be spared, and ill proceed to New York City and assume the duties of Superintendent the General Recruiting Service.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert S. La Motte, 12th Infantry, will report to e Superintendent of the General Recruiting Service to command the epot at David's Island, New York Harbor.

Lieutenant Colonel John S. Mason, 20th Infantry, will remain in comland of the depot at Columbus Barracks, Ohio, until further orders. The officers above detailed, with the exception of Colonel Shafter, will port as directed by October 1, 1882. The officers relieved will join eir regiments.

One company officer from the 1st, 3d, 5th, 7th, and 9th Cavalry will be elected and ordered to report to the Superintendent of the Mounted ecruiting Service, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, by October 1, 1882. One company officer from the 1st, 3d, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 7th, 19th, 21st, 23d, and 25th Infantry will be selected and ordered to eport to the Superintendent of the General Recruiting Service, New York City, by October 1, 1882.

These officers will be selected by the respective regimental commanders ctually with their regiments, and in making the selection regard will be ad to fitness for the responsible duty of recruiting and not exclusively length of service.

The superintendents will relieve officers of the above-named regiments n charge of rendezvous or at the depots as those of the new detail report, and order them to join their companies.

Recruiting officers are expected to give close personal attention to thei duties, and the regulations prohibiting the enlistment of minors and me of doubtful habits will be strictly enforced by the superintendents.

In accepting recruits at rendezvous, Tripler's Manual, paragraph 78 of the Regulations, and letter of instructions from this office, dated Decem ber 28, 1880 (printed for general information, November 11, 1881), affor the required standard of qualifications, and they are in like manner th standard for inspection of recruits after their arrival at depots.
