fore submit the following, and recommend that it be adopted as a standing resolution of the Grand Lodge.

Resolved, That the Grand Secretary be and he is hereby authorized, empowered and directed to purchase a Past Grand Master's jewel, and a Past Grand Master's apron, of similar pattern and design to those heretofore presented to Past Grand Masters, and have same in readiness to be presented to each retiring Grand Master at each annual communication of Grand Lodge.

JEWEL OF PAST GRAND MASTER BABCOCK.

On the 27th day of June, 1908, I received a letter from Ruth W. Babcock, widow of Past Grand Master W. Irving Babcock, stating that she was very much in need of money for present use; that she was along in years, and had no immediate heirs, and that she had consulted with several of the local masons in regard to disposing of the Past Grand Master's jewel of her deceased husband, and that they had advised her to take the matter up with the Grand Secretary, as they thought it would be better for the Grand Lodge to take the jewel than to have it sold to other parties.

In presenting the matter to M. W. Grand Master Herbert Montague, and after corresponding with Brother John M. Kay, of Detroit, Mich., who has manufactured most of the jewels presented to Past Grand Masters in recent years, and receiving an offer from him to allow the sum of $57.50 for this jewel, to be credited on the bill for the next jewel procured, the Grand Master ordered a warrant issued to Mrs. Ruth W. Babcock for that amount, which was accordingly done, and the jewel delivered to said Brother John M. Kay.

CONCLUSION.

Any additional receipts before the close of this annual communication of Grand Lodge, and any additional warrants issued, will be reported in a supplemental report of your Grand Secretary, to be published with the Grand Lodge proceedings.

In addition to the office-work duties of the Grand Secretary, I have participated in the ceremonies of dedication of the new lodge halls at Bangor, Harbor Springs, Montrose, Petoskey, Mancelona, Hastings, Ionia and Watervliet, and the laying of the cornerstones at Battle Creek, Menominee, Fennville, Traverse City, Sturgis, Petoskey, Owosso, Gobleville and Grand Rapids; also the visitation to the City of the Straits lodge, U. D., at Detroit, and the funeral of Past Grand Master Hugh McCurdy.

I was prevented from actively attending to the duties of my office for about two months, commencing the latter part of March, on account of a severe illness, which kept me confined to my bed for over six weeks; but Grand Master Montague came to Reed City and took active charge of the direction of the office, and, with the able assistance of Assistant Grand Secretary Jersey, and Miss Goldammer, the Grand Lodge stenographer, as far as I have been able to learn, the interests of the craft and of the Grand Lodge were not allowed to suffer.

I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation to our Most Worshipful Grand Master for the great service rendered in taking upon himself the burdens of the Grand Secretary's office in addition to the ever exacting duties of his own office.

I would like to express to my brother Grand Lodge officers, the members of this Grand Lodge, and to the craft generally throughout this Grand Jurisdiction, all that is in my heart to say, in expression of my gratitude for the many messages of brotherly love and sympathy that have come to me during the past two months; but I realize that I have no right to take up so much of your valuable time in a matter of a personal nature, and I will only say that you have all endeared yourselves to me as never before, and that I am convinced that I am permitted to be with you today largely through the influence of your prayers, and it

shall ever be my earnest endeavor to redouble my efforts to serve you faithfully in the future.

May our Supreme Grand Master bless you all abundantly, with the best gifts in his power to bestow, is my fervent prayer.

GRAND LECTURER'S REPORT.

Brother Frank O. Gilbert, Grand Lecturer, then read his annual report, as follows:

To the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Michigan:

Another mile-stone has been reached in our Grand Masonic journey, and I have the pleasure to greet you, at this sixty-fifth annual communication of the Grand Lodge of the State of Michigan, and submit, for your kind approval, my second annual report as your Grand Lecturer.

There have been held, during the past year, one hundred and forty lodges of instruction, and the attendance at these schools has been greater than at any previous year in the history of this Grand Lodgesixteen thousand, six hundred and sixty-one brethren. This means to me that the members of the lodges in this Grand Jurisdiction are taking a deep, truthful, and more sincere interest in our great and glorious fraternity. With a continued interest manifested in these schools as well as all other communications in the future, I predict that our Grand Jurisdiction will be second to none (I don't mean in numbers), but in spirit, brotherly love and friendship.

It is a great pleasure to report the increased interest manifested by the constituent lodges in the ritualistic work. In the majority of lodges I find the ritualistic proficiency well on to perfection, and it is only the closest observation that discloses a few errors such as omissions and transpositions. My criticisms were always courteously received, a sincere wish to know the truth was ever manifest; the leading thought was for future progress and improvement; there was complete freedom from wrangling over disputed points; the only emulation was "how best to work and best agree." This I consider a favorable omen. To have this noble work go on, my worthy brethren, you who will retire from the Master's chairs some time this year, means a continued loyalty and diligence on your part out of the chair, as well as in the East and also the hearty and willing co-operation of every good and true Mason.

It affords me a great deal of pleasure to have so many of Grand Lodge officers in attendance at the schools of instruction. To our Most Worshipful Grand Master for his interest and kind assistance he has rendered me during the past year, I am greatly indebted. May God bless him, and give him continued prosperity during the remainder of his life.
