HEARINGS ON FOOD ADDITIVES ANNOUNCED BY NUTRITION COMMITTEE

Senator George McGovern (D-S.D.), Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs, today announced that hearings relating to food additives which were to be held earlier in the summer will be held on September 18, 19, and 20. Senator Gaylord Nelson, author of two bills affecting food additives (S. 76 and S. 3163), will chair the hearings.

Witnesses representing the Food and Drug Administration, the food industry, and consumer groups have been invited to testify, in person and by written statements, on some of the following issues:

Government regulatory activities regarding food additives;
Testing of food additives;

Nutritional standard-setting and labeling for food;

The merit and review of the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) list. The hearings will be held each day in Room 1318 of the New Senate Office Building, at 9:30 a.m. Following is a list of the witnesses and the days on which they will appear.
