This Note describes the inpatient treatment service of federally funded community mental health centers (CMHC's) based on data gathered by the annual Inventory of Comprehensive Community Mental Health Centers. The universe consists of 295 CMHC's which were in operation for at least two months of the calendar year 1971 However, complete response to the Inventory was not obtained from each of the 295 CMHC's for each item in the Inventory. The reader should review the response rate to the Inventory (Table 15) as the interpretation of the data presented should take this factor into account.

The two aspects of the inpatient service examined in this Note are patient utilization of this treatment modality and the composition and utilization of staff in this treatment modality. Comparisons with respect to these dimensions are made among CMHC's differing with respect to: (1) center location, (2) affluence of catchment area, (3) years in operation, (4) ownership, (5) region, and (6) size of inpatient service as defined by number of inpatient beds. A description of additions to inpatient care as the first center treatment modality provided during the reporting year by age, sex, and diagnosis can be found in Statistical Note 88./

Patient utilization of the inpatient service in CMHC's is described in terms of inpatient episodes of care,d/ annual days of inpatient care, number of beds set up and staffed for priority use by center patients as of December 31, 1971, percent bed occupancy, average daily census and average length of inpatient stay per episode of care. The following observations relating to these inpatient utilization indices may be made from the data presented in Tables 1 through 7.

1.

An average of 441 inpatient episodes of care per center was reported for 1971. Each episode lasted an average of 17 days. Centers reported an average of 39 beds set up and staffed for their use as of December 31, 1971 but percent occupancy was only 54 percent. The average daily inpatient census per CMHC was 21 (Table 1).

2. As, compared to 1970, 1971 patient utilization indices revealed a shorter treatment stay for a slightly larger average inpatient caseload per center. The average number of inpatient episodes of care per center increased from 435 in 1970 to 441 in 1971. Average length of stay, on the other hand, decreased substantially from 22 to 17 days as did the average daily census (from 25 in 1970 to 21 inpatients per day in 1971). There was no change in the average bed count per center (39).
