The magnificent advance in prolonging the life span, made possible by medical science, presents a major challenge for our time. The added years must be made productive in terms of better health and fruitful activity. Ways must be found to make use of the store of skill and wisdom of older persons and to give a sense of purpose to the added years of life. Longevity is not a boon unless it is turned to good purpose.

for the 1961 White House Conference on Aging

We have the honor to transmit to you the report of the New York State Committee of One Hundred for the 1961 White House Conference on Aging.

The Committee recognizes the responsibility that you have placed upon us as a citizen group to make recommendations designed to promote the health and welfare of the aging and we wish to express our appreciation of the total freedom you have given us to develop our proposals.

The Committee has endeavored by a series of nine regional meetings held throughout the State to ascertain the wishes of the people of the State.

This report is the sum and substance of these deliberations. While the recommendations speak for themselves, we would like to underline their impact in these terms.

1. There is unanimous agreement that most of the problems of the aged are concerned with income, with medical care, and with housing, all of which require both immediate and long-range action.

out carries with it a price tag or a responsibility
that someone or some group must be willing to assume,
be it through government federal, State, local or
through private charity.

We realize that, on the other hand, failure to say what
ought to be done can also be costly in terms of im-
