Jefferson at Forty-six Photogravure reproduced from the Bust by Jean Antoine Houdon, in the Rooms of the New York Historical Library Jefferson paid Houdon, on July 3, 1789, one thousand francs for the original marble bust, which was destroyed at Monticello during Jefferson's lifetime, by the carelessness of a workman. Fortunately there are two signed plaster casts of this bust, owned respectively by the New York Historical Society and the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia. !
