EXHIBIT 23

(From New and Non-Official Drugs, 1961)

Although the over-all toxicity of the drug is low, it is capable of producing a variety of side effects and untoward reactions. Among the more common of these are hypersensitivity reactions. Dermal manifestations include urticaria and erythematous and maculopapular skin rashes, often ancompanied by intense pruritus. Shaking chills and fever may also occur. Acute non-thrombocytopenic purpura with cutaneous petechiae, ecchymoses, peripheral eders and fever has also been reported. The drug should therefore be administered cautiously to patients with a previous history of allergy or those with marked capillary fragility. Drowsiness also occurs in a substantial proportion of patients, but this appears to be an accompaniment of the mild somnifacient action of the drug rather than a side effect. Suicidal attempts with large doses of meprobamate have also been reported. Although none of these has been successful, patients have exhibited such alarming symptoms as come, shock and, in the most severe cases, complete vasomotor and respiratory collapse. The drug should therefore be prescribed cautiously and in small amounts, if at all, for patients with suicidal tendencies. Appearance of withdrawal symptoms, including convulsions in some patients, has been observed when the drug is discontinued abruptly after prolonged administration of large doses. This suggests that physical as well as psychic dependence on the drug may develop. In such cases "meprobamate therapy should be withdrawn gradually. Development of tolerance in some patients also may increase the possibility of habituation and acute intoxication, particularly in susceptible individuals. Among the uncommonly observed side effects and adverse reactions are gastric discomfort, paradoxical reaction with extreme excitement, intestinal hyperperistalsis with abdominal cramping and flatulence, severe diarrhea with rice water stools, palay of extraocular muscles with diplopia and generalized muscular paralysis. The possible occurrence of any of the foregoing untoward reactions should make it evident that indiscriminate use represents an unnecessary hasard to the patient. Therefore, the drug should be employed with the same discretion as other therapeutic agents and with due recognizance of the possibility of untoward affects.."
