369. Instructors are required to inspect the furniture of the section rooms immediately after recitations or examinations.

370. At examinations, practical work and recitations, where midshipmen may be excused when their work is completed, they shall not be allowed to leave except in squads of at least eight; the senior one, or one designated by the instructor, shall take charge and march the squad to quarters, conforming in all respects to the regulations governing sections returning from recitations. Those remaining at the end of the period shall be similarly formed in a squad or squads and marched to quarters. This does not refer to midshipmen who may be on duty, who shall return to their posts immediately upon being excused.

371. Instructors shall not allow midshipmen to address them on the subject of marks without permission of the superintendent.

372. Instructors shall not allow midshipmen to leave the section room, except in cases of necessity, and a longer absence than 10 minutes shall be reported to the commandant of midshipmen.

VIII. ORGANIZATION OF BRIGADE OF MIDSHIPMEN.

373. The brigade organization shall be as nearly as possible that of a naval brigade.

374. The brigade shall consist of two battalions of six companies each, to be designated the first and second battalions.

375. For purposes of discipline and drill each battalion shall be divided into two divisions of two or three companies each, to be designated the first, second, third, and fourth divisions.

376. For practical exercises the brigade shall be subdivided as may be necessary for detailed instruction.

377. The brigade shall be commanded by the cadet commander.

378. The brigade staff shall consist of a brigade adjutant, who shall take rank in accordance with the precedence list, issued in connection with the brigade organization, and of a brigade chief petty officer, who shall be the ranking petty officer.

379. Each battalion shall be commanded by a cadet lieutenant commander.

380. Each battalion staff shall consist of a battalion adjutant, who shall take rank in accordance with the precedence list, issued in connection with the brigade organization, and of a battalion chief petty officer, who shall be the ranking petty officer of his battalion.

381. Battalion officers and petty officers shall take rank in accordance with the precedence list issued in connection with the brigade organization.

382. Each company shall be commanded by a cadet lieutenant, with one cadet lieutenant (junior grade) and one cadet ensign as assistants, in charge of the first and second sections, respectively.

383. Company officers and petty officers shall take rank in their own grade, in accordance with the precedence list issued in connection with the brigade organization.

384. There shall be assigned to each company eight petty officers, four first-class petty officers and four second-class petty officers.

385. Midshipmen shall be quartered and messed by companies as far as possible.

IX. FORMATIONS.

386. Formation of midshipmen in ranks, without arms, shall conform strictly to the Drill Regulations, except as herein specified.

387. General formations without arms shall be by companies, unless otherwise ordered.

388. Movements of midshipmen in ranks shall be in "quick time" (120 steps to the minute).

389. The six senior petty officers in each company, in order of rank, shall act as first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth petty officers, respectively; other petty officers shall take their places in the ranks of their respective sections.

390. When cadet officers or petty officers are absent from infantry drill, instruction, or dress parade, their positions shall be filled by the officers and petty officers of their respective companies in the order of rank. Midshipmen of the higher classes shall be assigned as acting petty officers whenever the number of petty officers in a company is reduced below six.

391. With the exception of the first and second petty officers, cadet officers and petty officers of companies shall not be replaced at formations and inspections without arms in case of temporary absence. The senior cadet officer or petty officer present shall command the company at such times.

392. The companies shall be carefully and repeatedly sized in accordance with the Drill Regulations for Infantry. Midshipmen shall always take the places assigned them in ranks. The front rank of each company shall, as far as practicable, be composed of midshipmen of the higher classes.

393. When a formation call is sounded, midshipmen shall proceed at once to the designated place, form in two ranks, facing to the front, and preserve steadiness and silence.

394. The assembly shall be the formation call for breakfast, lunch, dinner, drill, and all battalion formations; other calls shall remain as at present.

395. The signal to begin the muster (a short blast of the bugle) shall be given four minutes after the formation call.

396. Midshipmen not in ranks at the second call shall be reported late, and shall fall in the line of file closers until the muster is completed, when they shall be ordered into ranks by the first petty officer. The third and fourth petty officers shall report all late midshipmen to the first petty officers.

397. Midshipmen arriving after the muster is completed shall be reported absent by the same petty officers. The names of absentees unaccounted for shall be reported immediately after meal formations; the adjutants, or acting adjutants of divisions will receive such reports from the first petty officers and transmit the names to the officer in charge after the meal. In case there are no absentees no report will be required.

398. Midshipmen who have been excused from a formation are forbidden to witness that formation or to be seen within the grounds in the vicinity of that formation.

FOR MUSTER AND MEALS.

399. The "second call" having sounded, the first petty officers shall immediately call the roll. Midshipmen shall answer "Here" in a tone just loud enough to be heard by the first petty officer. Intervals shall be left in ranks for midshipmen who are absent until the muster is completed, when the ranks 90399-11

in each company shall close in quickly toward the center of the battalion by the side step.

400. During the muster company commanders shall inspect their companies.

401. The muster having been completed, the first petty officer shall command, "Count off," and complete the left squad.

402. The company being formed, the first petty officer faces to the front, salutes the company commander, reports, “Sir, all present or accounted for; " or Sir, So-and-so absent, not accounted for," and takes his post on the right of the company.

403. The alignment is then to be rectified by the company commanders on the left and right companies of the respective battalions.

404. The battalion commanders, seeing their respective battalions aligned, shall face about, battalion adjutants taking post to the right and rear.

405. The brigade adjutant, seeing the battalions formed, shall face about and report the brigade formed to the brigade commander, who will direct the adjutant to publish the orders or to take his post.

406. The orders having been published and the brigade adjutant having so reported, the brigade commander commands, 66 Take your post, sir," and marches the brigade to the mess hall. 407. The brigade adjutant takes post in accordance with the Drill Regulations.

TO MARCH TO THE MESS HALL.

408. Each battalion commander shall then march his battalion in column of squads to the mess hall.

409. Battalion commanders shall precede their battalions into the mess hall; company commanders shall precede and the junior company officers shall follow their respective companies into the mess hall.

FORMATIONS FOR CHURCH AND INSPECTION.

410. The brigade shall be formed in line on the court and terraces northwest of and facing away from Bancroft Hall, the front rank 3 paces from the outer edge of the court.

411. The brigade shall be mustered in accordance with the Drill Regulations. Ranks shall be opened and the brigade re

ported ready for inspection to the senior assistant, who, after the inspection is completed, shall direct the cadet brigade commander to close ranks. Ranks being closed, the brigade commander commands, "Church parties, fall out; fall into the rear and center, double time."

412. Midshipmen belonging to church parties shall fall out to the rear and fall in on the court, to the rear of the brigade, in charge of their respective leaders, and be marched off after the brigade, returning to the court for dismissal, the leaders reporting the return to the officer of the day.

413. The companies shall then close quickly toward the center of the brigade and, if necessary, the companies shall "count off."

414. The brigade shall then be marched off in column of squads to the chapel.

415. The brigade and battalion commanders and staffs shall occupy the front center seats. Company commanders shall arrange seats for themselves, their junior and petty officers with their respective companies, so that proper order shall be maintained during divine service.

416. The choir and Catholic Church party shall fall in at assigned times and be inspected by the officer in charge before being marched off by the senior midshipman present.

SECTION FORMATIONS.

417. At the hours stated in the routine the bugle shall be sounded and at the same time a gong shall be rung on each floor and in all recitation buildings. Four minutes later the bugle shall sound one blast and gongs shall ring on each floor. At this last signal the muster shall begin, and as soon as completed section leaders shall dress their sections to the center (to the left in the first battalion and to the right in the second battalion), closing to three paces between classes. Section leaders shall not go to the flanks of their sections to dress them, but shall give the orders from their position in front of the center of their sections. After the sections are dressed the section leaders shall report to the midshipmen charged to receive reports of absentees. After all reports are received the sections shall be marched off by the class leaders.
