964. Articles not required to be regulation on entering:

Handkerchiefs, white. Comb.
Nightshirts or pajamas. Hairbrush.
Socks, black or white.
Suspenders.

Whisk.

965. Jackknives, with laniards attached long enough to go around the neck, shall be worn by midshipmen at seamanship drills.

966. No part of one dress shall be worn with another except as provided for in the working dress.

967. Drill gloves shall always be worn with overcoats and reefers.

968. No midshipman shall, at any time, have any article of civilian or nonregulation clothing in his possession. No articles of clothing made to measure, mackintoshes, or dress caps shall be received by midshipmen until they have been inspected by the senior assistant to the commandant of midshipmen.

969. All articles of clothing shall be marked with the owner's name as follows; the wash number will be in addition thereto. 970. The large stencil shall be used in marking the following articles: White canvas jumper, mattresses, pillow, and clothes bags. Where duplicate surnames occur, the initials of the given name shall in each case be affixed. All other articles shall be marked with the small stencil, except those designated by a star. 971. Articles in the list with a star opposite are to be marked with indelible ink in the proper place with the initials and surname, written legibly with a pen, or with the small stencil. 972. *Shirts.-Inner side of neckband.

* Collars.-Inner side of neckband.

* Cuffs. Inside, lengthwise, and along middle line.
*Undershirts.—On silk or woolen facing to neck opening.
*Drawers.-On left side of waistband near buttonhole.

*Socks. On the ribbing, near top; may be marked on cloth and sewed on.

*Handkerchiefs.-In one corner.

Overcoats. On strip sewed inside across middle of back, between shoulders.

Reefers. Inside of right sleeve.

Blue blouses.-Inside of right sleeve.

While blouses.-On pocket.

Dress jackets.-Inside of right sleeve.

Mackintoshes.-Inside back, between the shoulders. *Knit caps. On tape, sewed inside near top.

Oilskin coat.-On left breast, large stencil.

Oilskin trousers. On waistband, large stencil.

Oilskin hat.-Inside, across back rim, small stencil.

Leggings. Inside of under flap, between button and edge.

Dress caps.-Underside of sweatband.

*White hats.-Inside of headband, in front.

Trousers. Inside of waistband.

*Gloves.

Inside of hem about wrist; may be marked on cloth and sewed on.

Working jumpers.-Outside, across front, 1 inch below neck opening, large stencil.

*White blouses.-On pocket, inside.

*Sweater and jersey.-On tape, sewed on inside of back of collar.

Clothes bags.—On the side, across, equidistant from the end. Sheets.-Across one corner.

Pillowcases.-In the middle of one side, 1 inch from and parallel to hem at one end.

Spreads. On the corner.

Blankets. In one corner; may be stamped on cloth and sewed on.

*Towels. In one corner, parallel to end.

Mattresses.-Near one end, on both sides.
Pillows.-Across end.

*Shoes.-Inside, near top.

*Pajamas. Inside of waistband, and inside of opening near

neck.

*Drill gloves.-Inside of wrist.

*Slippers.-(White) inside, on canvas. *Bathing drawers.--Outside, near top. Sweeping brooms.-On the handle.

Whisk brooms.-On the handle.

Mats or rugs.-On underside, near one end.

Spatter cloths.-On back.

*Suspenders.-Inside of one leg, back.

*Books.-Inside of front cover, across the middle.

XXXIV. WATCHMEN AND POLICE FORCE.

973. The watchmen and police force shall be under the direction of the commandant of midshipmen and his assistants. They shall guard all public property, and report any violations of the regulations which may tend to impair the buildings or grounds.

974. Watchmen and masters-at-arms shall be regarded as special police with powers to make arrests or inspections, in order to preserve good order or to protect public property. All arrests to be immediately reported to the officer in charge.

975. They shall prevent the entrance and report the departure of all unauthorized persons from the grounds.

976. The captain of the watch shall inspect the watchmen on duty from time to time during the day and night, and shall see that their duties are properly performed.

977. He shall patrol the grounds during the day and occasionally at night. He shall be on duty at all public entertainments, see the fire hose in readiness, and remain in attendance until lights are extinguished.

978. He shall receive the reports of the watchmen, notify the officer in charge immediately of anything amiss, and daily report to the commandant of midshipmen at 9 a. m.

979. The watchmen shall ring the work bell and the fire alarm.

980. They shall keep a lookout in the rear of officers' quarters and around Bancroft Hall, and shall frequently visit all floors in Bancroft Hall between taps and reveille.

981. The masters-at-arms, or their assistants, shall remain in the buildings during the absence of the midshipmen or while they are at meals.

982. The masters-at-arms shall accompany the officers in charge of divisions at forenoon inspections, and shall be responsible for the general cleanliness of all parts of the midshipmen's quarters except their rooms.

983. They shall remain on duty from 6 a. m. until 10 p. m. daily, except at such times as the commandant of midshipmen may give them permission to be absent.

984. The officer in charge may give them leave for not more than one hour, for special reasons, in his discretion.

985. They shall see that the kitchen fires are extinguished when the cooks leave the buildings; and at 8 p. m. they shall put out all unnecessary lights in the basement, when they will report to that effect to the officer in charge.

986. They shall light up the corridors at the proper time. 987. The orderlies shall extinguish all lights that can be dispensed with at 10.30 p. m.

XXXV. ROUTINE.

988. The day shall be divided for purposes of study and recitation into three periods, one of which shall be in the afternoon. 989. Study hours shall last from the morning call to studies until the end of the second period, from the call to afternoon recitations until the end of the third period, and from the evening call to studies until gun fire. Study hours on Saturday shall end at 10 a. m.

990. The bugle shall sound the call for studies and recitations. 991. Daily except Saturdays and Sundays:
